Ok, so here's my deal. Let me start with an example:

If I take an mpeg2 and drop in into Media Classic - or right click the file and do an "open with - it'll take a long time to start playing (maybe a minute). Then, the video will be jumpy. If I let it play through, 7 out of 10 time when I play it again, it's fine. Then, when I try and close the folder the mpeg2 was in - let's say "My Documents", it won't close, and I'll get an End Program dialogue box (the one where you hit "end program" 'cause it won't respond).

Any idea what's going on? I didn't have this problem a few weeks ago, and I'm having difficulty figuring out what I might have installed that's causing this. Before, if I double clicked an mpeg2 to, it would start in Media Player Classic (from the K-Lite codec pack) no problem. Also, now when I try and double click an mpeg2, it's starts in Media Player 9 automatically (even if I change the "open with" in the properties).

At present, my only problem with it is that if I try to play an mpeg 2 with WMP 9, I get an error and it shuts down. I realize I can play mpeg2s elsewhere, but I don't like that the problem exists and want to fix it (w/o a re-install....) My laptop's rockin' playing mpeg2s in WMP 9.

How can I un-install mp9? I go to add/remove programs, windows components and it's not there. I'd like to try a fresh install to see if that helps. It's driving me nuts.

I've had nothing but problems with WMP9 myself. Did you try installing an older version of WMP, then going into "file types" and assigning .MPG files to the older WMP? You can have more than one version of WMP at the same time, and if you unassociate WMP9 with everything you shouldn't have anymore trouble.

Often times the "newer version" of an app is actually worse. Look at Nero 6 for example :P

Actually, I installed WMP classic and now (it didn't 2 days ago) it plays mpeg2s fine. I'd love to get to the bottom of why wmp9 and 10 crash when I try and play mpeg2s - it works on my laptop. Obviously there's a conflict somewhere. WMP9 and 10 play mpeg1s and .avis fine as well.

  5. wmp9 is garbage, don't worry why it doesn't work, but forget about it...unfortunately you cannot just uninstall it...there are some sites that claim their is a way to do it, but i tried them, and it didn't work...best bet is to reinstall the operating system...

    Yeah, that's too bad.

Maybe I'll just live with it for now.

    I fixed it!!!!

Turns out that .dll - mcmpgdec - is part of 3 programs - Ulead DVD Factory, Ulead Media Studio Pro and DVDX Show. So, I uninstalled the programs. Then, again, I searched for the .dll, and it was still there - files were left over from Ulead. I deleted those, but alas, there was still one instance of the .dll left. So, against my better judgment - I'm crazy like that - I just deleted the .dll. Considering that it might screw up my system, I set a restore point and didn't empty my trash as well. Well, no system screw up, and I'm now able to play mpeg2s with WMP 9 or 10 or whatever.

Of course, I'm now w/o those 2 programs, but at least I got to the bottom of it. So, I'll reinstall. Maybe a clean install of the programs will turn out ok, but if not, at least I know where the conflict is, and I can just use another program to play my mpeg2s
