  1. The following review was made on the videohelp.com website:

I bought one of these Mintek MDP-5860 Portable DVD Players about a week ago from FutureShop in Toronto, Ontario, Canada for $249 Canadian (about $185 U.S with currect exchange rate) and it ROCKS! It plays DVD’s VCD’s, SVCD’s, audio CD’s, MP3-CD’s, some MPEG’s (not sure what makes some of them playable and some not…but I’m looking it to it – might be a bit rate thing), JPEG-CD’s, and even DivX movies (yep...I said DivX!). I have yet to come across anything besides some MPEG’s that will not play. And the sound quality (using headphones) is superb. The time index search function is incredible, especially when playing DivX movies (as DivX’s have no chapter selection).

But there is an error in the description at the FutureShop website; the Mintek MDP-5860 Portable DVD Player is a regular 4:3, 5 inch screen. The Mintek MDP-5861 Portable DVD Player is the 16:9, 5 inch wide-screen. But, if you do the math, and figure out the area, the 4:3 MDP-5860 gives you almost 1.5 square inches of extra screen! So who wants the wide-screen anyway!

The external battery is a bit cheesy, but it does fit VERY securely, and has a lock/release switch. For the price and the features, I can live with it!

Also, it comes with car adapter, etc.

Can anyone confirm whether this player really plays divx? How about xvid? This could be the best kept secret out there.

    Optimus,

I looked at a number of websites that sell this unit, no mention of DivX. Also, on the Mintek website, no mention. Here is the main page on Mintek's site for this model: http://www.mintekdigital.com/mdp5860.htm

You'd think that if it really did support DivX, this would be a huge selling point (as well as adding to the cost of the unit, making it a must to mention it). There is nothing about it at all, though the Mintek site really doesn't say what types of DVD's it plays, either. So there's a small chance of it, but more than likely, someone is full of crap.

I'm doing more looking, nothing so far. Would be great if it really did play DivX, but I'm very skeptical at this point (but I could be wrong, I don't have one to test it out, so who knows?)

  4. My guess is that they were either divx movies that were converted into mpeg and kept the .avi extension (which would explain it there was a divx watermark) or it was just a file that because it had an avi extension he thought it was divx. I have a mintek 1770 and when I put a disc in I'm almost positive there were files that I thought had .avi extensions but then they played. I had come across this file misnaming thing before when using my sega dreamcast to play mpegs which I am positive did not play divx (at that point in time anyway, since then programs have come out that let you). It seems that the player looks at the structure of the movie rather than the extention. That's my theory anyway, take it or leave it.

    Hope it helps.
