It's been a very long time since I've needed CDR discs since I mainly backup DATA and obviously DVDrs are better for that.
My point is, I have fallen behind in the CDR media industry and I would like to know for future reference, what brands to go for and what to stay away from.
I know TY makes great DVDrs, but not necessarily good CDRs... which is why I am a bit confused.

Although I have never tried them, Taiyo Yuden CD-Rs are supposed to be good as well, plus they are HD-Burn certified for you Optorite owners.

I use infinity CD-R's, they are perfect quality for everything I use them for (audio,mp3,wma,data,VCD,SVCD,X-Vid,Divx,etc). They are very reasonably priced too!! Always nice

From my experience, TY CDs are every bit as good as their DVD counterparts.

For the longest time I was using Maxell discs, until I discovered that they are actually Ritek discs with the Maxell brand. Since this discovery I've switched to Ritek brand, which are the exact same as the Maxell, except with a different name on them. The reason for switching was that I paid about $5(Canadian) less for the Ritek(when bought in a pack of 100) than I had paid for the Maxell. So far I've only had one bad burn with them and that was due to a small hole in the media. I'd never seen that before. Other wise, I love them.

TY got their great reputation from their CDR's. I have many from 1997- no problems-- that's pretty much all I've use since then. TY or Mitsui are the only one's I'd trust. Ritek CDRs aren't so hot, they make much better DVDR media.

For CD-R I use like the crappiest brand GQ and I get perfect burns. No problems whatsoever. I probably got like 10 coasters out of 2500 CDs. Seriously when it comes to CD-R any brand works nowadays

I think CDR tech. is very mature already, so there is really no point to buy those "branded" CDR media because that is called rip off to me! there is plenty of CDR media from many places for very cheap like GQ at frys here in Southern California, which is selling for only $14.00 per 50 pcs, like www.shop4tech.com is selling their house branded CDR media 48X for only $16.00 free shipping per 100 pcs, and also many more out there! what is point to buy Sony, TDK or ETC branded products? don't you all know, all those branded CDR media are all made in Taiwan! don't get fool over by "branded product"
-
yea seriously, if say Sony or TDK actually manufactured their CDs then yea I wouldn't mind paying more for those CDs but the reality is that my GQ CDs come from factorys that probably operate the same as whatever company that makes Sony CD-Rs and may even be better! Ah who knows
-
how much are you paying those GQ? just for your infomation they are made by CMC!

Buy what ever has the best looking label!
Really, I have never had a CD burn fail or any disk go bad in many years of burning CD's that was caused by a bad disk! I have had them severly scratched, power failure durring a burn, etc.. NON-disk related failures, but never due to disk quality.
I buy whatever is free after rebate this week or has the best looking label on top of the disk if I actually have to buy it. I mostly preffer no label or graphics, just plain top with a writable surface.
I have Memorex, TDK, and some other name brand I had to buy because I needed disks at various times while traveling and name brands were all I could get. I also have Circuit City and other store label disks that were free after rebate. After burning the CD and sticking on a Neato label I can't tell the difference in any of them.
The only disks I have any concerns about was some off brand I bought cheap at Big Lots, I can actually hold those up to a dim light and see right through them, but so far they all burn perfect and none have failed. Those are the most abused disks also! Since I did not trust them I gave them to my 12 yr old daughter last year for her birthday with a new burner for her system. She has burned most of those as MP3 disks (copies of her expensive CD's). Those disks are about 1yr old and still working. Burned and cared for by a 12 yr old. She'll be 13 in about a week, so the first dozen disks or so are about 51 weeks old now .
Now that I am printing my CDs as well as DVDs I by TY silver top Cds. I like the silver tops for some of my fancier labels and buying 100 at a time they are cheap enough I don't worry about the cost at all. I have plenty of extra disks around the house of other types if want to print neato labels, but I want most of my disks to be printed now instead of labels. -
All you silly people will be sorry in 10 years time when you discover that the digital photos you popped onto your no name CD-R has unrecoverable errors...
CD-Rs are CHEAP. Get good quality discs. Since Kodak Ultimas are no longer in production, I only trust Verbatim Datalife Plus disc now.
