  1. Hey guys, I got my new burner and it's broken. It literally is a cupholder now. It always stays in the eject mode. Everytime I push it in it comes back out. The computer senses it, but it wont' stay in long enough to read anything! It waits five seconds and ejects again. This is terrible! Did I do something wrong?

  2. Just wanted to tell everyone the problem. The front of my Sony Vaio is very different from the average front where the dvd-rom bays are. I had to switch the face plates of my DRU700A because the black one is smaller and fits in the hole for the bays. I changed the tray face plate only and not the drive plate and evidently the black tray plate and white bay plate aren't compatable. Once it was black and black it worked fine...bizarre.

Do you actually post anything else in the forums than "Sony burners sucks"? I think people know your opinion about Sony's burners by now from the 50+ "Sony-burners-are-sucks" posts you already have written...

  6. Well I just don't think it's very helpful to bump a more than a week old thread with "Sony burners suck" when:
    1) He didn't even own the same model as you had. The DRU-700A is based on complete different hardware (OEM Lite-On) than your DRU-500AX and the only thing they have in common is the Sony brand on the face plate.
    2) He has already solved the problem.
    3) You don't even explain why you think they suck.

But yeah, I'll try to ignore all your posts from now on.

  7. Sony is not even making there own burner's any more some are made by lite-on. There are alot of people that have ton's of problem with sony. I had two of them in two differnet PC's. Both had the same problem could not burn some media that Pioneer could burn with no problem. This tell's me there lense is junk. Also there software CD that came with there burner was crap. Some time when you install there software and rebot all your CD drive's are gone. There have been other post about this. Also my friend has the DRu500AX I told him not to install the Sony software you could lose your cd drive's. He one of those people in one ear out the other. He had to reformat his pc to fix it.

  8. the sony faceplates come off if you push up on them. The ones on my 500's do, they are too big but if you take it off, it should fit better & there is still a plate behind it so dust can't get in.

  9. I kinda agree with spiderman that sony sucks, in general they do. My Sony DV cam been to service too many times, the only brand of CD-rom i had that died was sony, got a broken Sony amp somewhere too (and i dont mind, the sound sucked anyway). But then i notice that spiderman got an LG (Low Grade?) dvd writer, so i cant see hes doing aything to improve his equippment . At least Sony has some good products (as long as they work, thats not long in my experience) but LG??? How much i hate my 21" LG tv... The first one died the first day, no sound, and even if it was written stereo all over it the tuner was mono. But it WAS cheap, yes

  10. Does the drive tray close flush? If it doesn't, or something is blocking it just a little it might open itself back up. But since I have no direct knowledge of the drive or your computer I have no idea. When in doubt return it.
    Blah, blah, blah

  11. Sonys don't suck as much if you load proper (i.e., LiteOn) firmware onto them instead of the half-crippled firmwares that LiteOn wrote for its Sony rebadges.

  12. Maybe I'm lucky, but I've had no problems at all with my quad format Sony burner (DRU-510). The only glitch I encountered was when I tried to use cheap BeAll DVD-R's from Meritline last year. I could not burn a full 4.4 GB on those and wound up making coasters out of about 10 of them before I figured that out (noob mistake). Fuji DVD-R's burn all the way to the edge for me every time and go on sale frequently at Best Buy.

My DRU-510 works perfectly, as have all my Sony products.
If your Sony products dont work why not contact Sony?
I am sure they would want to look at your units.

  15. jameshgross is right actually I have stated before in posts here, Sony has excellent customer service and fast repairs. After all, they are used to repairs, they are really good at that.

There were a few examples that Sony made product suck. I had a second generation MD (MiniDisc) Recorder costed me about US$800 bought in Hong Kong where new Japanese consumer products usually appeared found first outside of Japan. It played and recorded only 3 months, then it died. Those shops import them and sell them usually carry only 7 days warranty, then you are on your own. Local Sony agent or distributor will not help you.

Except JVC and Panasonic, other Japanese name brand consumer electronics have similar situation and results, only differences is Sony had a higher rate of failure due to its a leader of new products.

  17. I have a DRU-510A that's been working perfectly for ~7 months. Think that one's made by Optorite? Also have a CRX-220E1 CD burner w/ hacked Liteon FW I use only for Mt. Rainier. That's over 1½ years old.

Someone mentioned Minidisc. Still have a MZ-R50 portable I bought in '99 and JE-920 home deck. Never had a problem w/ either.

And let's forgot 4 Betamax decks that are 16-20 years old and are all still going strong.
Like a flea circus at a dog show!

Nah. The 510A was the last Sony-branded DVD burner to be Sony-designed and Sony-made.
