Any brand of DVD recorder will honor macrovision and will not allow you to copy protected tapes. You need to remove the MV signal with a stripper or a TBC. Some recorders have a TBC built-in, but that won't strip the signal. They honor MV too. It has to be an external device to remove MV from the signalOriginally Posted by lupio

I'am not a pro so not sure i understand all you explanation but you agree that with a Philips home dvd recorder you can copy vhs without a black box ?
-
No, I'm saying that you can't. Unprotected VHS - sure. But not protected commercial VHS tapes.Originally Posted by lupio
You need a device to strip the macrovision signal. The home recorders all honor macrovision and will not let you make a copy of a protected tape. They are required to honor macrovision if they want to sell their units.
You must use an external stripper to remove the signal before you even feed it into your recorder. -

The device that they sell will remove the Macrovision protections, and allow you to transfer "your" VHS tapes to DVD. The device will sit between the VCR and the DVD recorder. I have used this device on every commercial VHS tape that I owned, and I have experienced no problems. -
So the person who tell that with a Philips home dvd recorder you don't need any external thing to copy Movie VHS to DVD made a mistake ?
Maybe user here who have a Philips recorder can comfirm

You can copy a VHS movie with any recorder - just not a protected VHS movie. If the guy told you "yes you can copy a VHS movie using this recorder without anything but a VCR and the recorder", he was telling the truth. If the guy had said "Yes, you can copy any movie, even macrovision-protected VHS movies, using just a VCR and this recorder", he was just trying to make a sale and didn't really know, or he was outright lying.Originally Posted by lupio

Yes i talk about protected movie and no reason to be ungry , i just ear talking by someone that if i had bought a Philips i'll not have to pay 100 $ for this external black box and i just wanted to know if it's true or no

The price is well worth the satisfaction you will have in being able to backup all of your commercial VHS tapes.

I use one of these to transfer VHS to my DVD recorder... defeats MV no problem and had the added benefit of being able to enhance the picture prior to recording. I bought mine pre-owned off eBay for $60

question: who and why the hell would u use vhs anymore?
i booted mine 3 years ago and never looked back... here's my suggestion... take ur vhs to the roof of ur house, toss that sucker off and watch, with glee, as that bitch smashes to pieces, then follow-up with baseball bat or sledgehammer (or whatever ur fancy) and make sure the job is finished right till there's nothing left but a mangled and shattered piece of metal, then go out and get urself a dvd recorder.

Uh, to convert their tapes to DVD? Read the damn post...Originally Posted by Gillies
