  1. Hi there,

I recently started having problems with converting avi to DVD using TMPGEnc Plus 2.5. When the process is completed I get no sound which is very strange as before it all worked fine. Does any one have any ideas what it could be

    Thx a lot

I have tried that and is still the same no sound. How could I check it I have the right codec installed?

Can you play the file back with sound before encoding?

  5. This only happens when I join two avi files together with virtualdub. With direct stream selected for video and audio. After I join the files I can play it with sound no problem but is when I do the conversion with Tempeg to dvd I end up with DVD file with no sound. Is very strange because if I convert a single avi file to DVD i end up with a file with sound!

If you get sound from your AVI then you have the corect codec installed.
GSpot or AVICodec will tell you what codecs are used or required for any AVI.

When you convert to DVD with TMPGenc Plus The output is 2 separate files a .m2v file which is your video file and a .wav file which is your sound.
If you play back the .m2v file you will not get sound.
If you play back the .wav you will get no video.

When you use TMPGenc DVD Author and add your .m2v file it will automatically add the .wav for you.

The resulting .vob files in the VIDEO_TS Folder will have video and audio muxed back together.

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The other possibility is that you have AC3 audio in which case you would need to extract the audio as a .wav first using virtualdub then use that wav as the audio source for encoding with TMPGnc .
    TMPGenc doesn't like AC3 audio.

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------

EDIT One more thing is to install ffdshow , I have heard this quite a lot lately for TMPGenc audio problems.

  7. Hi there,

Thx a lot for your replies.

I have tried using TMPGEnc like you said with m2v + wav being extracted first but the problem is when that is proceding VOB sub does not display subtitiles on the video which I dont know why?

  8. i had the same problem, until i realized that the video had a variable bitrate and not a constant bitrate, so what i did was convert the AVI file again with Dr. Divx and then just extract the audio from this new converted file with Virtualdub or TMPGEnc and replacing it with the one with "no sound"

    Hope this helps!

Then don't join them, do two single files and let your authoring process join them together. You'll end up with only a slight pause between them when played.

Every conversion causes quality to decrease, your choice.

Yeh but If I convert to single files i will end up with two 4GB files. Then what, join them and have 8GB file ? Im confused!!

Just before you hit encode with TMPGenc you have the option to set the output to a certain percentage of the DVD-R . Set it a little under 50% for the first part and the same for the second. Then when you author them they will fit on 1 DVD-R.

  13. Will that bring the quality of the movie down? If yes by how much?

That would depend on how low the bitrate goes.

By 24.085 %, to be exact.

    Try it and find out.
    If in doubt, Google it.

Your still going to fit it all on one disc so wether it is One joined file or two seperate files . The quality would be the same I would have thought.

You could continue ahead and make a 8 GB DVD in your authoring software and use SHrink or something like that to make it fit.
    If in doubt, Google it.

I think it's better to make it the proper size in the first place, rather than running it through Shrink as well.

I wonder whether the quality will be better encoding to the correct bitrate in the first place or using DVDShrink to use its magic ?
    If in doubt, Google it.

  20. Thx a lot for all your replies.

I have done the 50% conversion for each part of the movie. The quality hasnt changed much. Maybe the subtitles lost the sharpnes a little. But the problem still there no sound in the end. Which audio option should I use with TMPEGnc. I only have to avaliable MPEG-1 Layer II Audio (MP2) when I use this one no sound is applied to the output file. The other one is Linear PCM audio.

When you say it has no sound, do you mean when you play the files on your computer or when you burn and play it on your DVD player?

  23. Hmm the problem is still there. I just realised that it only happens when I try to convert avi's with AC3. How do I go on about this?
