Colorado Man Goes on Rampage in Armored Bulldozer

    Jun 7, 10:34 am ET

DENVER (Reuters) - A man riding an armor-plated bulldozer went on a rampage in a Colorado mountain town and smashed into city hall, a bank and other buildings before being found dead early on Saturday morning, police said.

Authorities in Granby, a community of 1,500 people 60 miles northwest of Denver, identified the dead man as Marvin Heemeyer, 52, a businessman who held a grudge against town officials after losing a recent zoning dispute.

Heemeyer drove the bulldozer, which was fortified with steel and concrete, through Granby's main street on Friday afternoon, plowing into buildings and causing severe damage to the town's city hall, bank, newspaper and other businesses.

"It looked as if a tornado touched down and hopscotched across the town of Granby," said Colorado Gov. Bill Owens, who surveyed the scene Friday night.

There were no reports of injuries.

A Denver television station showed the makeshift tank cutting a swath of destruction through the town, knocking over light poles, trees and smashing into several buildings.

After 90 minutes, the bulldozer became wedged in a hardware store that Heemeyer had crashed through. Several hours later, police entered the bulldozer at about 2 a.m. Saturday and found Heemeyer dead, according to a statement from Grand County Undersheriff Glen Trainor.

It reminds me of two other incidents - one where a national guard pilot stole an A-10 tank killer, and another one when a soldier stole a tank and ran amok in San Diego driving over RVs and cars.

Man...I bet that was fun, probably very theraputic and stress relieving....well at least right up until he died

I know there has been a few times that I've been on the road where I wish I had a tank to remind some of our ADD drivers to lead, follow, or get the hell out of the way.

reminds me of when mike stole a tank and tried to invade Paris.

Bit weird that he crashed and the police just left him for a few hours. do we reckon they heard the screams but pretended not to?

a few years back a couple met in a bar in kentucky. for their first date they stole a dump truck. they were chased all the way across tennessee before state troopers in georgia set out spikes and stopped them. must have been a wild ride for a first date.

  11. y'know, the guy who stole the dozer was cool about it. he got back at the people/town who fucked with him. he didnt mess with innocent peoples houses (in his opinion).. he just took out city buildings and the houses of those responsible.
