    That article is very Onion-like.

Of course, some would be offended by the thought of a 14 year old kid exchanging snail-mail adresses with a sexual predator and being lured and killed by him.

Sad that this sorry-assed 14-year-old actually thought what he was doing was actual "dating". The kid needs to grow up, go out of the house, get some sunshine, play a little ball in the park, and meet some real people his own age.

Like the one guy said on the heartbreak forum, how did he know it wasn't a guy - specifically a homo pedophilic predator who would love to make some pimply-faced 14-year-old adolescent boy his love slave, at least until he tired of him and decapitated him and screwed the stump

Even with all the warnings to adolescents about culturing online love affairs, they still can't resist :P I don't feel sorry for the kid at all.

Guys, I really am starting to worry about you. Can anyone besides me see that was weak attempt at humor? Especially the last sentence. Yuck.

I even photoshopped our avatars together on a Martian landscape--way romantic.
I used the clearly out dated flowers and chocolates technique

Ohh, that was so touching. Does anyone have a hanky? GET A FREAKIN' LIFE KID! I will personally take the shotgun to every computer in the house before my child ever gets like that.

People today substitute cyber-life for real life far too easily. Not only that................. wait a minute........ gotta go, wife says I've spent too much time on the computer today.

I apologize if my wording was a bit strong. It was in poor taste. I just get sick of hearing about this poor litle wank and all the warnings he probably ignored to carry on with an electronic girlfriend like that, not knowing if it's a real girl or not. It's his stupidity if he does fall prey to one of the sickos who troll full-time looking for just this sort of vulnerable kid. He got off lucky this time with only a broken heart. It could have ended much more tragically.

Man, and I thought my life was sad Poor little wanker needs to get himself some sheep
Hope is the trap the world sets for you every night when you go to sleep and the only reason you have to get up in the morning is the hope that this day, things will get better... But they never do, do they?

I can vouch for that. It'd be safer and healthier than online romances

interestingly, one of my ex girlfriends who i'm still in contact with met her fiancee online, and my old next door neighbour met his wife of five years online. not all people on the internet are horrible fucked up weirdos. this area is a bad example :P

I don't see anything wrong with meeting people online like this. after all, you can tell if someone you're chatting to is chatting to someone else, it's difficult to fake a webcam, and if you really spend several hours a day chatting to these people you do get a gague of what they're like. i don't think it's possible to keep up a charade for months on end.

I do think that it's a parents' responsibility to be aware of what your kids do online, and not so much try to restrict them as educate them and leave them to make their own decisions. like pornography, if you want to see porn then how can you be too young for it? a six year old doesn't want to see it, a nine year old probably doesn't, most twelve year olds will and all 15 year olds will. it's like an 11 year old daughter telling her mother she's haveing her first period and the mother clamping her hands on her ears and shouting "LALALALALALLALALALALAAALALALALAAA!"

    Flan,

I agree that it's not the issue for adults that it is for adolescents. I was primarily aiming my comments at the 10 - 15 age group where the sexual predators seem to converge, or at least they used to a few years ago. Maybe it isn't as bad anymore.

I detest anyone who would use a child for their sick fantasies, and being trusting the kids make easy targets. But I would be all in favor of a board where the members could be screened by maybe being required to verify their identity, much like Paypal does. Something that would be impossible to fake. Then the web could be safe and fun for these kids.

The world would be much safer from sexual predators like Spanky the Clown with such protective measures. People could goatf**k in peace knowing their companion is a safe one.
