Anything external to my computer runs the risk of having beer spilled on it, so external is out for me. Check out the reviews, you'll get heated debate on this one. I have a PX-708A...

Currently my vote would be for a nec 2500. It can be picked up for 75.00 and will burn at 8x.

Although the dual layer burners are coming out and blah, blah, blah. It will be at least one year before these are the norm and media prices have fallen.

    regards

also there is a slim chance these burners may be upgradeable to support dual layer. nec 2510A

You really have to do some homework on this one. It depends on what you want it to do and how much you're willing to spend on it. THis could get into a flame war over favorites, but just check out different DVD writers and find one that works closest to what you want it to do. You might want to consider a dual format burner, or one that burns both + & - R(w) discs. This will help you to find out which media works well in your players, if you plan on doing any type of video authoring or DVD Back-ups. I myself have 2 NEC 2500's, a I/O Magic RW 4x, and another I/O Magic that's RW 8x. Both I/O Magic's are Dual format burners.
