  1. I started out wanting to buy mom a dvd player. then I thought I should replace my Sony NC615 5 disk player with a new one with progressive scan now that I have a TV that I can use it with.

I burn lots of DVD's with my NEC2500 and that is what it is for the most. I dont need to play all other formats just really music & dvd's(burned & store bought).

I have looked at the reviews but some of them are old. I need to know what brands to avoid and what to check out. I bought a Zenith yesterday but it doesnt seem to get mch attention here and I havent opened it yet so I may take it back and get something else.

my current Sony plays all my disks but doesnt have progressive scan or many other options for connection so I want to upgrade.

want to spend less as possible but not get junk either. I can buy from Circuit city/Best buy/ radio shack/ walmart...sams

It must have good pic quality and play my burned dvds(mostly +r's)

over here at least less than $100 for a player with progressive scan is a bit optimistic. i've just bought a sony dvp-ns930 for £240 (you should find it for around $240) with prog scan, twin scarts, analogue outs, great -R playback and a lovely picture. i'm a fan of sony's dvd players 8)

  3. Get your self a Cyberhome DVD player. They play everything except pie tins, but I think that you can get it to play if you buy the adaptor, jk. It sells at Best Buy for $30. I think that there is a Maganovox model that does the same, but won't say on the box. The Cyberhome is a tiny thing that isn't your standard size DVD player.

I believe the Cyberhome plays DVD+-RW and SVCD and VCD

  4. I went with the phillips 642 which can play avi, mp3, xvid, divx, mpg1,mpg2 and dvds all on cd or dvd medial. Price is $69.99 at walmart, compusa and target. This player is small, nice face to it and has progressive scan.

  5. You can't go wrong with Sony, especially the newest ones, they are the only ones I've seen that specifically say they play DVD+- disks. There are several models under $100. Another feature they have is the ability to change picture mode and audio setting without using the remote (which tends to walk off in my home). We've purchased two this year and they both work great. They are on sale at Walmart several times a year for about $79.
Prior to purchasing these we had a Pioneer we gave about $250. for and it worked great on everything except DVD+ which was hit-and-miss. I spent a lot of time trying to determine what I was doing wrong in my burning; after getting the Sonys, I found I was doing nothing wrong-what a relief.
If it works, don't fix it.

Better, faster, cheaper also applies to DVD players. Prices of DVD players have dropped significantly especially since China forced a restructuring of licensing fees for DVD log use.

Sony is an interesting brand. Whatever it plays, it will play well. But if a brand is going to not play something, it will be Sony. But it's not because of workmanship. It's because Sony will try to protect its interest as a studio and DVD trademark part owner.

As a studio, they want original disks. As a trademark owner, they want homemade disks to be genuine DVD licensed disks. Think about it!

I finally bought a CyberHome w/an extended warranty. I had two die in one day one me. But when they worked, they're OK. So I guess I split the difference...an international capable DVD player w/2 year parts and warranty. It was only another $30!

  11. which dvd player do i buy for ,
    1) cost under 90$ ?
    2)plays region free dvds?
3)plays divx and xvid with mp3 properly?
4)i live in asia and my cousin in california and it should be easily available?
    5) i have an old tv so progressive scan not required?
    6) the player should not give any problems regarding repair or something for atleast some time?
    7)good functional remote?

the reason i am posting here is, as much info as i can get out of the net i will never be able to have a hands on experience so second best is to consult someone who already has used this stuff.

reply quickly plz as my cousin leaves from california in 5 days time and he has to buy and pack it .
    thnx.

  12. I just bought a Panasonic F65. It's a 5 disk changer and has played everything I put in it. (X)VCD/SVCD/+RW/-RW. I was going to write a review and forgot. I think it's discontinued (that's what we get at the BX over here) but I paid $78 and got a one year free replacement agreement. It is progressive scan but only on the RCA connector I think (don't know, I don't have a progressive TV) and has component outputs too I believe. There's something about it not having a dolby digital decoder built into it. I'm not audio expert though and with my two speaker set up, it probably wouldn't make much difference.
