How do I determine the bitrate of commercial DVD's ?

How can I quickly and easily determine the bitrate of commercial DVD's ?

Well, you can look at the size (in MB) of the movie (video only) in the initial display of Shrink or any other program...

Then divide by the running time, which gives you MB/min.

Then divide by 60, which gives you MB/sec.

Then multiply by 8, which gives you Mbit/sec.

Use a software player like PowerDVD

when playing the movie, right click the mouse and click on show infomation. this should display a information box in the upper right hand corner displlying the following information:

Time, Title, Chapter
Video MPEG2 Bitrate information
Audio information

the second line will display the bitrate. note that all commercial DVDs are variable bitrate (as far as i am aware of).

The problem in PowerDVD is that it will display the current bitrate, its changing as the movie plays, hard to tell whats average. If you go to Settings -> Information it will display only the max bitrate. Best to use Bitrate Viewer i think.
