All I can say is Get one with a digital interface, (DVI) you will never have to "Tune" the monitor to get maximum clarity from it that way.

(I know because my laptop has a digital interface to the internal display, a 14.1" UXGA resolution... Gawd I love super Hi-res)

Well mines not huge in size, but I can personally say the higher end viewsonics are awsome.

  4. Look for one around 450:1 or 500:1 contrast ratio
    If it's wet, drink it

And if you do any serious gaming try for a 20ms or lower response time. If you don't game then 25 is fine.

  8. For the lower response time also check out iiyama. I know most companies make monitors with a dvi-i and d-sub input but don't know if a lot of other companies have monitors with dual dvi inputs, although I know some higher priced iiyama's have them, especially good if you want to connect two pc's.

(I think with dvi alone you can connect analog or digital outputs to it, not just digital like with dvi-i)

Hmm, AFAIK, DVI-I is only used on video cards, and is capable of putting out either analog or digital for use with all types of monitors. I never heard of a DVI-I port on an LCD that would accept an analog signal on the DVI port, only ones with both options, (DVI and D-Sub, although I may be wrong.)

  10. tdowning, the iiyama monitor i'm talking about is a 19inch model, but can't remember what one. It does say it has dual dvi-i inputs though. It also says that these can handle analog or digital signals.

As you said, most other monitors around only have dual connectivity in the form of dvi-i and d-sub.

Do you have a link? I'd like to see that for myself, since it is quite odd.

  12. You can go to the iiyama website and find the monitor (AS4821DT).

Or you can go to this page and download the datasheet and it also gives you the information about the dual dvi-i: http://www.new-monitors.co.uk/fulldetail.asp?ID=a032

I would agree the viewsonic vp171b is the best.

  15. How about the rest of their "b" series? -- I might have to go check it out at a local retailer to get a true feel for it...

  16. the "b" just designates the color. the series is "vp" the 21" is pretty kick ass, but the 19" and 20" are slower.

  17. Anybody seen this Hercules panel mentioned in this article:

Supposedly, it beats the Viewsonic by "a landslide"...

I checked the monitors that Newegg sells (Viewsonic, Samsung syncmasters, etc...) and did not find any 19in monitors with a lower response time than 25ms.

It looks better, but its still slower than the viewsonic, I dont see where they can say "landslide" I think when I get one I will be going with the Hercules cause its so kickass looking!

anymore suggestions for 19" - 20" LCDs with 16ms response time? (probably 19" since they're half the price of 20")

only ones i've found so far are:
    Sharp LL-191A
    Sharp LL-T2015
    Viewsonic VP201b

  22. Looking for one also. Esp with the local electronic places doing pritty good sales.

The problem is the darn spects are so hard to compare.

The key for video I guess is the response time but have seen some reviews that put 20's over 16's or even the 12's!

    Found 1 more, NEC LCD2080UX+.

  24. Good price!

Got one last friday. A Sharp LL-171A-B. Darn nice monitor! Cant tell if any dead pixels and plays UT 2004 greate! Could not resist the price also. has 20ms but since I am running and firing spiders boms like mad dont notist if its got ghosting.

Had to splurge for a new Nividia card but went with a 5200 since games are 10 percent and programing work is the rest.
