  1. This is the newest version of ZA Firewall. I've installed it on 4 seperate machines now and it fubars something on everyone. Froze eDonkey on mine by causing a memory leak. kept blocking DNS on both work computers so the internet and mail was inaccessable. Corrupted Norton Anti-virus on another. This is the worse ZA so far.

edonkey had more of a prob with my router than ZA. ZA does cause some conflicts but thats because its locked up tight as hell.

Not with me. I have used ZA for years with emule.

  5. yes eDonkey has a warning about such problems with ZA, but like VCDHunter I've used them together for a long time with no problems. This last update has been the only one I've found to have issues with it. On the work PCs it keeps locking all internet traffic at random and even unlocking it won't help until you shut down ZA. Thankfully its all on XP and I could roll them all back. Put Kerio on instead and no more problems so far.

  6. I installed this new version of zonealarm on my 2 machines and its causing various programs that are accessing the internet to lock up. I had to uninstall it completely in order to get rid of all the problems. Are there any other free software firewalls that are as good or better than zonealarm. Or does anyone know if you can download previous versions of zonealarm anywhere?

This is the info in Norton AntiVirus Readme.txt:

    Zone Alarm incompatibility issue
    --------------------------------
You may encounter problems using Norton AntiVirus with
Zone Alarm installed on your system. We recommend
updating your version of Zone Alarm or uninstalling it
    when using Norton AntiVirus.

    --------------------------------

I feel both together is causing the problems.

I may suggest installing Zone Alarm first and then install Norton AntiVirus after and this might work?

I am using NIS/NAV in my PC and I am also at times having problems too.

I have to uninstall and to re-install it up to five times this year due to corruption after downloads of updates from Symantec.

Symantec's new version of redirector was the latest problem and this won't configure well with the files already in the system. I have to uninstall and to re-install it all over again on several PCs.

I have found that it is better to download the NAV program, security programs, security updates and then the definition updates later as all separate.

This is just as a guide and the downloads must come in order to avoid problems.

Mixing of Zone Alarm and Norton AntiVirus isn't recommended either.

  9. I would rather let ZoneAlarm to block any suspicion traffic.

I have ZoneAlarm, Norton Internet security and Ad-Aware. They do pick up some 'normal traffic' time to time.

That is very easy to change ZoneAlarm's setting later. But I always look very careful with Norton: once done, very complicate to undone with NIS.

Just up-date to ZoneAlarm Security Suite v5.0.590.015: It lets many unwanted pop-up through. I have to un-install it and go back to good old ZoneAlarm Pro with Web Filtering v4.5.594.000.

    Eveything back to normal again!

You are right! Zone Alarm 50.590.015 MUST be avoided

    Thanks..........

i also installed this a few days ago with strange consequences. previous versions have caused me no trouble, but after installing this version my broadband connection disconnected every half hour randomly, causing internet applications such as IRC, inet explorer and BT to freeze completely. after about 10 minutes of total freeze, the connection was back to normal and the programs worked again. i cba living with that tho, i uninstalled it and everything works fine now. shame tho, cos i prefer za to norton, but nm.

Zonealarm should always be avoided. It stops site realtime compression, tools page with and without compression http://www.pipeboost.com/getreport.asp?URL=https://www.videohelp.com/tools , 30 kb download instead of 172 kb download.

    Baldrick,

Since you do not recommend Zonealarm, what would recommend as a non hardware firewall option?

    Thanks

  13. I use kerio now and its working just fine, though the web filters can cause some issues, but they are easily disabled.

kerio 2.1.5. but maybe you can disable the http filterering in zonealarm, that would be easiest. you can test if gzip works here , https://www.videohelp.com/test.php , it should say gzip after http_accept_encoding:.

  17. Thanks... I will try Kerio....

  18. Man, zonealarm seems to be following the "get worse as it gets newer" trend. Microsoft, symantec, winamp, and now zonealarm. I still run 2.6 and its great.
