I keep trying to view the page on the above subject on the lordsmurf website, but its alwasy unavaiable and just gives a timeout error. Can anyone tell mw which format they recommend? From what I have read it is the +RW option and they play on all DVD players (?), whereas the -RW only play on selected players. The -RAM seems to play on even less so I've not included that one in the subject. Is it like VHS vs Betamax again? If so will +RW triumph? Any help much appreciated

  2. I have had no compatibility problems with either +RW or -RW. I prefer using +RW myself.

I suspect you have it backwards: -RW should play on more players than +RW, seeing that the -R/W formats came out a few years before the +R/W formats...

  3. There is very little difference between the two media formats. Personally, I'd just find one that is compatible with your burner and DVD player, and just use it.

  4. Rewitables are too expensive to buy bad media, best to buy something others had success with in the type of burner you got. I had terrible experiences with +RW, but i realize its caused by bad media (OPTODISK). RITEKW01 -RW seem to work very well in mine. Im sure any normal quality +RW will work fine too, im not the only one with Optodisk problems. Now i already have the Ritek -RWs so dont need anything else anyway, but ofcourse +RW is "better" because they can usually be burnt at 2.4x and up, while 2x is still the normal for -RW.

I prefer +RW more. INFODISC si good.

Then -RW next. Not a favorite at all. Slower too. PVC, TDK and Maxell here.

Finally -RAM. I hate it. Waste. Panasonic.

I've had nothing but success with -RW's they have played on every DVD player I have tried. I have also tried +R's and have no trouble on my DVD player which is a decent player but some of my friends have had trouble playing them on their decks, one had a cheap deck the other an older Sony. Could be the disc, the +R's are cheap ones. Is it possible for a player to not play a disc soley based on it's quality. For example: You have two DVD players that will play the same high quality +R disc. Is it possible for one of them to reject a low quality +R disc that will play in the other one?

    I haven't tried using +RW's or -R's.

I use -RAM all the time to back up files on my hard drive. I sincerely hope it edges out the floppy disc before too long. 4.35 gigabyte removable storage... what's not to like?

Apart from that, plus all the way for me. Simply because the DVD Consortium doesn't like it. :P

Use a multi format writer like LG-4048 and you wont have to worry about what media to burn. LG 4048 can write -RAM media as well. The -R(RW) is more compatible with many DVD-player than the +R(RW). However with LG-4048 you can write 8X on DVD+R and only 4X on DVD-R.

Like previous poster said, with LG-4048 you can make a huge 4.35 FAT32 or UDF removable backup.

I use minus personally. Mainly because when I got into the video game there was a huge difference in player compatibility. I just stayed with it because the media was less expensive for a long time.

DVD-RAM is great for two reasons - HD-like error correction, and true random reads/writes without "laying down a track". Like niffenasion said - what's not to like?

The only reason I have ever used minus is the same - player compatibility. Given that a) I like giving the DVD Consortium the finger at all possible moments and b) I've grown sick of Toshiba taking a piss on the customers they relied upon in the beginning to make the DVD-Video format a success, my next player will be rigorously tested to make sure it plays both plus formats.

Thanks for all this input guys, one of the reasons that i thought that +RW were more compatible than the other formats was due to this web site: http://www.dvd-and-media.com/dvd%20glossary.htm. Having read that it did make +RW sound more appealing, but the concensus here seems to be for -RW. Any particular brands best to buy? And any brands prone to high failure rates? I wil be using a PC based DVD Burner Pioneer DVR-107 if that helps. Thanks

  12. -RW *only* has compatibility going for it and the 4x disks *might* be as incompatible (or more so) as +RW.

I don't care about -/+R but +RW is clearly better than -RW. I cannot speak about -RAM but it looks good too...

I have 20 DVD-RAM discs and 20 DVD +RW discs sitting right here. No problems with any of them. My usage may be different as I'm using them for transferring from my DVD Recorder (DVD-RAM) and store until I get around to converting them (DVD +RW). At some point I may be able to use the +RWs also for recording. It depends on which DVD Recorder I get next.

    LG GSA 4040B is the correct model #. I had GMA 4020B, GSA 4040B and GSA 4082B. I had bad experiences with Princo 1x DVD-RW and Memorex 1 x or 2x DVD-RW.

Maxell DVD-RW no problem at all but very expensive compared with Maxell 4x DVD+RW. Memorex 4x DVD+RW is a cheaper version of Maxell 4x DVD+RW. Tou can quick erase the 4x DVD+RW in 7 seconds!

Maxell 2x DVD-RW quick erase in just over 1 minutes.

All -RW and +RW DVD discs played well in my DVD players.
