You need to use an encoder.

TMPGenc is a good programme if your new to this.

If you click on TMPGenc in this post it will take you to the tools section and also some very good guides on what to do with it.

There are different Mpegs of course Mpeg1 is VideoCD and Mpeg2 for SuperVideoCD and DVD. You didn't specify which you want to do.

    Hope this helps.

  5. prinbird,

I can tell by some of your posts that you are really, really, a newbie. You are truely 'green'. Don't let the people on this forum get you down, sometimes they are a little cruel. Asking questions like this are going to get you skewered every time.

This video stuff isn't something that is learned overnight. Most of these people have been doing this stuff so long it is second nature. The best way to learn is experience (and failure). At this point, probably every reply sounds like a foreign language. But, keep plugging, it sounds like you have the desire to learn and video-making is a worthwhile endeavor and provides hours and hours of entertainment.

There should be a book for beginners that explains what tools you need to do what you want. This stuff is like a 600 piece puzzle and it takes a while to get it all together. I've been doing this for about six years now and there is still a lot I don't know. Keep using this forum, and check out some of the others. Read, read, read. And, hang in there.
If it works, don't fix it.

    Thank You.

That was a really lovely post and made me feel heaps better.
I have been able to do a DVD im one of these people that i have to learn even if i dont do it very often.
Im not really into films much i prefer dabling in the digital camera and eventually i will want to know what video card i can get for my pc, so that i can put my wedding video and others on to dvd.

I am really glad that there are some people out there who care and who realise that it does look like a load of mumbo jumbo to us learners.
My husband used to do all this up until 18 months ago when he had a stroke at 38 and now he cant remember so cant help me.
So he gets frustrated when he cant tell me.
    Thanks again

    Some hints:

Fill out as much of your computer specs in your profile as you can. I see you filled out a couple of things like your OS and hard drive size, but any other info you can provide (read: CPU speed, video/capture card, CD/DVD burner type, etc) is helpful for people trying to help you.

There are a lot of guides to the left that a lot of people have put a lot of work into. Most of them are very detailed and easy to understand. Just about all the basic stuff is covered in them.

There is also a search option to the left there that you can use. Use it to search this site for answers to questions you may have. You will find that most things have been discussed ad infinitum on these forums.

Never be affraid to ask what might seem like a dumb question, but do realize that there are a lot of people here who are willing to help anybody willing to put forth the effort to help themselves, but there are also a lot who will "give you the business" if you come across as, shall we say, not so inclined.

Details, details, details! Provide as much information as you can when presenting your question/problem. For instance, a question about conversion you should provide as many details as you can about your source file, (read: format, frame size/rate, codec info, etc). You should also offer up which software you are trying to use to do whatever you're looking for help with. Though many here do in fact know everything....none of us are mind readers

    Yet.

Also, try not to be one of those annoying people who start a thread with "HELP!" or some other lame non-descriptive subject.
"There is nothing in the world more helpless and irresponsible and depraved than a man in the depths of an ether binge, and I knew we'd get into that rotten stuff pretty soon." -- Raoul Duke
