One of the guys here at work just bought a new AMD 64 bit motherboard/CPU. He says he's going to do parallel computing with four computers. Is anyone else doing this during the encoding phase or anything?

At present, few applications can take advantage of the this kind of processor, they must be written specially for this purpose.
Pararell computing ? as far as I know, only Linux has the ability to do this kind of task.No tengo miedo a la muerte. Solo significa soñar en silencio. Un sueño que perdura por siempre. .. -
Windows NT3.51 and higher has been able to work in what they call clusters. All current versions on Unix (unix like OS) can be compiled for par. processing, including Mac OSX.
There is at least one thread about using multiple computers to encode, and why it may not work as well as you think. Win2000 Server editions can also task off to a cluster IIRC.
To be able to have several computers accessing your source video file though you'd want some fast accessing hard drives like a good 15k SCSI drive. -

That is an awesome website. I've wanted to look at that VIA setup for delegating mundane stuff (like E-Mail and this forum) to other machines. How cool.

good price on it too, same workload as 4-6 P4 systems for about $1200. be interesting to see the performance of the newer nemeiah cored boards, upto 1.2 ghz and full speed FPU.

$1200?
Damn I need to build one of those. But wouldn't a rackmount set of DN800s be faster? Oh man, I need to stop buying computer stuff or expand the business so I can justify it. Anyone wanna start a small video biz in MN with me? -
