OSX is running on my Athlon!

Like most PC / *NIX users I'm an admitted MAC stalker. I read the rumor sites, I gaze at G5s through the Apple store glass and think someday..someday I will walk in and drop the cash.. Then I realize that would be foolish, and dream of days in which OS X will be ported to the x86 architecture. A dream that will hopefully someday come true..

Back when OS X was first created (from BSD) Apple realized that their current PowerPC architecture was sucking and decided to keep a current OS X port running on x86 machines (x86 instruction set = Intel, AMD for newbies). This project was codenamed 'Marklar' and currently employs about a dozen fulltime Apple programmers. Consider this Apple's backup plan should the PowerPC fail to keep up with Intel / AMD microprocessors. Of course Apple doesn't admit that the 'Marklar' program even exists, but I've heard differently.

Anyhow... enough with the Apple history channel – today I stumbled across a PowerPC emulator for Linux & Windows by the name of PearPC. I've heard of things like this in the past, but this time I was told people are successfully running OS X inside of Windows. And let me tell you, it works! Now don't get too stoked yet, there are some problems as this is the 0.1 release... in other words, alpha at best.

Here are the details you need to know:
    - It's slow, very very slow – as in 286 SX slow, as in iTunes for Windows slow... you get the idea.
    - Certain machines work, others don't. From what I've seen in the forums it's about a 50/50 shot it will work on your PC.
    - You must own OS X
    - Lots of bugs.. think of it as a proof of concept for the time being.

All that being said – If your like me, you'll want to install it anyways. So follow these instructions exactly: (down and dirty instructions – I recommend this as a prerequisite)

    1. Download PearPC-JITC and extract it to c:\pearpc
    2. Download and install Alcohol 120%
    3. Download the Darwin PPC .ISO and save it to c:\pearpc
    4. Download these configuration files and save them to c:\pearpc – File 1, File 2
    5. Download and extract this file to c:\pearpc (takes some time to extract as this is the 6GB hard drive image – use WinRAR)

    6. Now use Alcohol 120% to create an ISO image of OSX 10.3 disk 1. Name it osx.iso and save it to your c:\pearpc directory
    7. Follow these instructions and partition the new 6GB virtual drive – (from a command prompt run 'ppc ppccfg.darwin') - no need to install darwin.
    8. Now run 'ppc ppccfg.osx' from the command prompt

Step 8 will boot you into the OS X installation – install and enjoy... As you will see in the forum links below, everyone is having different results. Remember, it takes awhile and it's not uncommon to freeze for a few mins. Use F12 to enable the mouse and move it around from time to time. Doesn't really do anything.. but it makes me feel better that it's not locked up

It is not worth it, imo. You could free up those system resources to do so many other things like watch cap's porn.

  5. tgpo,

I don't have a copy of OS X, but I do have system 8.1 - do you think this would work? I'll be going home on Thursday and if I can get MacOS on my PC.....

    Thanks,

    Cobra

it doesnt really even run well on G5's -- our mac people here still hate it but are coming around to it by nessessity ..

I still want a real port for x86. I also want that nice slick NT for the G5 that MicroFlaccid has.
Hope is the trap the world sets for you every night when you go to sleep and the only reason you have to get up in the morning is the hope that this day, things will get better... But they never do, do they?

Mac is pretty, but they get really hot and get sluggish, and just generally aren't as perfect as a PC for getting real work done (outside of graphic arts or layout, at least).

Might want to check out the G5, doesn't seem to have any heat issues. Not surprising considering how its built...

The G5 at work is now only being used for sending jobs to printers. I hardly use it for design work anymore. Not that the PC is any faster with all the resource-depleting leechware the company puts on it. At least the Mac is clean of all their crizzap. Only reason I don't use it is because all our resource-tracking is done through the PC so rather than snag it back from the Mac it's easier to create there and then print through the G5. But damn if it isn't a great print server

marklar is a big rumor, but hell I had a thorey even before it had a name, so I think its true.

Basicly the idea is that a small group of programmers keep porting the OS to the PC, with the basic idea being if the worst happens like PPC starting to REALLY blow Steve Jobs and crew has an extra axe to hang over IBM or Mots heads, or a backup plan.

I'd love to run OSX on x86 hardware, but I bet you'll still hve to buy APPLE hardware to be supported, but I'm fine with that.

The PC does not even recognise the disks! You can not get the source code for Aqua or Cocoa, so even running the Darwin core will not get you there.

The short answer is that it will not work. There was another about this same topic, I suggest a search, since I'm too lazy to retype the only ways to get OSX working on a PC.

And even if you did get it running, the binaries would not run properly.

You know, I think they should throw like a G3 or G4 on a One of those new PCIExpress cards, buy out that PearPC software then market them together as an testing solution. Kinda like the old PC cards for the mac, but in reverse.
