up until recently I have been using my wintv-pvr(usb) to record the simpsons and then encode them and burn them onto vcd and they all worked perfectly on my stand alone dvd player. So how come this all stoped just a few days ago???????????? I tried reencoding them and reinstalling nero and nothing works...I find it hard to believe that its the encoding because nero doesn't have a problem with it(which is rare) so it encodes perfectly and burns perfectly but doesnt play!! normally I would just pass this off as computers not really being all their cracked up to be and usually that is the case but up until about a week ago this process was working perfectly for me and it just stopped....any suggestions?

Well that certainly does sound weird. The ONLY thing I could think of was, did you switch the brand of blank cd's that you use? I thought maybe if you switched to a cheaper brand, your DVD player wouldn't be able to read them.
Sorry if it didn't help, you did say any suggestions, and I was the first to say something out of 60 people that have read this.
Good Luck

maybe the laser on yr dvd is going out.could b coming more sensitive 2 the media played in it.test it on another dvd player.

What are you using to encode?..if it is tmpgenc and you are doing svcd's then maybe the time for it ran out...I have a registry entry that prevents this so I do not know what warning you would recieve.
My 2 cents. -
It could have been a bad batch of media, not just a cheaper brand that you may have switched to.
This may also sound a bit stupid, but have the CDRs actually been burnt? I have 'burned' CDRs on few occasions with Nero where everything seems to be working OK, the burn process says it finished OK etc. - But NOTHING was actually burnt to the media. This is not a setting like "simulate only" either, all the setting were identical to my standard settings. I have to reboot and reburn for it to work properly. This has happened on about 4 occasions on the past.

oh my god....now that I think of it I am using a new batch of media, and no matter what Ido it wont read it, can that really happen? but heres the irony, the new bacth Im using is higer quality than the old batch that worked but I guess that doesnt mean anything, maby the dvd player is just obsurdly picky...wow thanks for the tips I thought that may have been the problem but I didnt think it would matter but since everyone is mentioning it I guess it does matter. While Im at it does a vcd have to be written in "disc at once" mode..meaning should I check the box or not?

Yes, it can.
There are basically 4 types of dyes (Cyanine, Phthalocyanine, Advanced Phthalocyanine & Azo) & 3 types of reflective layers (Gold, Silver & Aluminum). There are several 'types' within each type of dye. Get a copy of CDRIdentifier. The newest version, 1.63, does not give as complete information as the older 1.61 does. Grab 1.61 if you can find it.

you dont have to burn disc-at-once, but assuming your drive supports the feature there is not a single reason not to and potential problems if you dont
