  2. I was thinking the same thing - sounds great! My big concern, however, is the price of the "special" media necessary to burn the laser image on the top of the disc. Since DVD-Rs/CD-Rs are so cheap, I think this is going to prevent me from buying one. The new discs will probably be at least twice as expensive as the regular ones...

    What I presume from reading the LaCie and Lightscribe info is that media should be available that has a special dye on the label side for burning grayscale labels directly into the disc's surface. Certainly the drive will burn data to any media but will need the special media to create the burned-in labels.

    HP, Imation, Memorex and Verbatim are supposed to produce this media. Apparently, one of the weaknesses is the time it takes to burn a label. Here is one story:

    Here is a news release from Verbatim that says a 10-pack of 52X CD-R media will sell for $9.
