In Catholic school (which I was switched over to) I'd get pounded on the back with a book by an old crabby nun - nuns were the most brutal of all

My mother was nuts. She would hit me with whatever was in her hands. I got busted over the back of the head with a cast iron skillet that she was frying potatoes in...made me clean up the potatoes and peel news ones. Got whipped with a chain dog leash...and the dog was still on the other end but her favorite was that little metal shovel that you use to clean the ashes out of a fireplace or wood burning stove....not the one with the long skinny handle, but the shorter one with a wide pan. Of course when I was a littler kid there was always the hotweels race tracks....

I got a smack when I did something really bad or I was cheeky/defiant. It wasn't anything major at all, nor damaging. It just stung like hell for a few seconds. It definitely helped me find out what was acceptable and what wasn't. I never resented it - I knew I always deserved it and I wasn't in a hurry to repeat it.

I learned lessons from it, and have carried these lessons with me for good. No pain, no gain. Plus, I bet it hurt my parents a lot more than it hurt me.
