Bought two 25 disk TDK 4x spindles at Costco today, both marked made in Japan (code RICOHJPNR01). Spindles rang up as $24.99 each, coupon from Costco book rang up as $29.99, 50 DVDs for $19.99.
-
Bought two spindles one +R, and one -R. Picked up one of the older +R spindle containers ( thick black bottom) amongst the thin black spindle bottoms, this was code RICOHJPNR01. The - R is:

I'm thinking it might be of good quality giving me 8.0x burn speed but that is only a feeling. It seems most of the DVD-R media that can burn at 8x is still of good quality and the market hasn't yet been flooded by low quality 8x DVD-R media yet. -
I just bought (2) 25packs today and here's the media code. Looks like I got a bad batch. I've been buying these discs from Best Buy for a while now and they've always been the TTG01 variety.

So, in other words, you can get 2 25 disk spindles for what you'd pay for one.... -
I don't know if Costco is consistent in stock across the country, but from the 2 posts above it seems that the 4x -R stuff is TTG01 and the 4x +R stuff is CMC MAG F01. Have there been any exceptions to that?
I wondered after Johnny C-Note's post if there might be any RICOHJPNR01 +R media at Costco. When I looked, all the +R and -R media said "Made in Taiwan", and since I thought the "JPN" in the Ricoh code meant Japan I figured it couldn't be RICOHJPNR01 but had to be CMC MAG F01 or MCC...002. Though I've never tried TTG01 -R, that seemed preferable to those other 2 manufacturer choices even though I was told all of these are made by CMC. I'm more fearful of shelf life than anything else, and I don't know how CMC compares to Ritek in that area.
Frankma, did you really get charged $19.99 for 2? At my store, the receipt not only shows $24.99 but the sales tax is on figured on the $49.98 subtotal rather than $24.99 which I thought was rather cheesy. Most other stores don't charge you sales tax on a coupon. -
Coupon came in booklet from Costco with about 2-3 months of sales, not sure but I think it was mailed in May/June? Below is copy of ticket (I hope)
-
Forgot to add, these are DVD+R. Made in Japan spindles actually have code 767068, not 767078 shown on ticket. Had to dig in pile for these.
-
Watch out for the CMC TDK's ... bought a spindle a few months back and many are failing now.
-
Should I just return these 2 25pks of CMC discs. I burned data onto one disc and it completed succesfully but I didn't run any tests on it.
-
Bought one and got one free +R spindles yesterday at my local Costco.
Made in Taiwan. Code is RICOHJPNR01. -
Does any have the coupon code for the buy one get one free and/or the dollar off coupon that "Frankma" used?
-
I just bought two packs in Silverdale, WA and this is their code: RICOHJPNR01. I've had good luck at the Costco's in this area and where my parents live in southern Utah having the TDK Ricoh's. I did not have the coupon, but they told me to tell the guy at the cash register and he would have the coupon. He did and I got the deal. However, i did not get the $19.99 deal, but I'm not complaining for 50 DVD+R's for $30!
-
DVD_Ripper, when you say "watch out for the CMC TDK's" are you referring only to the ones with media code CMC or also to the TTG01 and MCC media codes?
I found out that these are all made by CMC, but lordsmurf thinks that TTG01 is better than plain CMC. Now that I've been told that TDK 4x +R media is RICOHJPNR01 made in Taiwan (the "JPN" part in the name made me think Japan), it seems +R would've been a better choice than -R. They had several stacks of -R but very few +R. The nearby Costco is probably sold out of +R, and I'd be surprised if they'd allow an unopened +R for -R exchange after the sale is over because "the SKUs are different".
Does anyone else feel strongly that +R RICOHJPNR01 is substantially better than -R TTG01? My big fear is that one of these days recordable DVDs will start failing (rotting) en masse. -
I wouldn't take TDK if it were free. The last two batches I got from Staples were junk.
Any company that uses CMC to produce ANY of thier discs scares me. -
I really dont know what to say, but when I buy TDK , I will look at the top face of DVD, if it smooth and shine then it is CMC and I advoid it, it is not smooth and shine it is RICOHJPN, look that way I get 100% right all the time. If you never have CMC or RICOH TDK then it is hard for you
. My Costco have RICOH
Cheers, -
I went to a different Costco to return my CMC +Rs. At that Costco, I found some +Rs that were noticably different than most of the others. The outer plastic wrap was the hard & crinkly kind, instead of the soft and more pliable kind. Also, there was a white sticker on the wrapper with product information (including the Costco item #), whereas the CMC package had that information already printed on the paper sleeve.
Needless to say, these are RICOHJPNs, and they're NOT going back! -
Are there any other tell-tale signs how to identify CMC vs. RICOHJPNR01 +Rs from Costco? I guess I'm not sure exactly what is considered smooth and shiny not being able to see both side by side. The ones I'm looking at are not smooth like glass and they have the soft (not crinkly) shrinkwrap and a sticker with the item # on it and "Made in Taiwan".
In the unopened pack I can see some lettering around the spindle hole of the disc on top which says "K4501720C501RS4052502B06918". Does that give any sort of clue of CMC MAG F01 vs. RICOH...? Could somone check to see if their CMC and RICOH types have similar letters around the rim?
I think if TDK media is mostly made by CMC (unless you get lucky) and there's no foolproof way to tell by looking, it would be best to stick with various types of RITEKG03 and G04, such as Ridatas that are basically the same price. I would assume Ridatas are preferable to CMC stuff?
Two other questions: Does Costco allow full refunds on opened media if you haven't actually burned it? Does Costco charge everyone sales tax on the subtotal BEFORE they subtract off the coupon instead of after (as most retailers do)? -
I can't answer most of your questions, but I do know that the Costco I returned my CMC packs at didn't have any problem taking the one I opened. Costco is usually pretty liberal when it comes to returns.
Our Costco also charged sales tax on the "free" item. I think it's supposed to work that way, when the BOGOF coupon is from the retailer (as opposed to being from the manufacturer). -
I just picked up 2 more -R's today, despite the "one offer per household" limit. They still had lots more, so it's not like anyone wasn't able to get in on the deal....
-
JohnnyCNote, I picked up two more of the -R 's as well (TTG01). They burn at 8X on my NEC 2500 firmware 1.07. No errors or problems so far, I think they are good media. So, I'm with you and feel we got a good deal.
-
Used a few hundred TDK TTG01 and more than 1000 TDK TDKG02 media, all from Taiwan. Great stuff, almost flawless burns.

I looked over the + and - R's and all were made in Taiwan. I'm tempted to drop by tomorrow and get another pair...
-
All of them made in Taiwan in Costco, if you never see TDK Ricoh then you dont know TDK CMC
, I have it b4 so I know
.
My Uncle bought in another Costco 70 miles away and he got CMC. CMC I burned 4 pack of 10 b4, and the last pack 6 out of 10 are bad, so 6 out of 40
