Currently my DVD player is hooked up to my Dolby Digital/DTS 5.1 surrond sound receiver with an optical cable. I set the DVD player to SPDIF/RAW.

I was wondering if I buy a very cheap DVD player and hook it up to my amplifier in the same manner as now. Will changing the DVD player have any affect on the quality of the sound or will it be exactly the same as before?

most cheap players dont have optical. if you find one that does it really shouldnt change. of course buying cheap you really cant tell, if the brand uses cheap internals it could make a difference.

    so thats your yes/no answer

I've noticed that sound quality most often depends on the way the audio is encoded on the DVD. For instance, I have some DTS tracks that sound like total crap, compared to a regular 5.1 or 2.0 track on the same disc.

    Hi,

Digital output from any DVD is just that - digital - a series of 1's and 0's.

It's the Digital to Analogue converter (DAC) inside your AMP that determines the quality of the conversion to 'sound'.

Some people say that Coaxial digital is better then Optical digital - but personally I can't see how this can make a blind bit of difference on short cable runs from your DVD player to Amp. No doubt someone will replay saying 'this is better' but in all honesty (and this is my opinion btw) either will provide you will a perfect digital signal.

    Hope this helps ...

  7. TeeRex is absolutely correct..digital is digital and the quality of the sound is not an issue untill you begin to convert to analog. If anything, optical is better than coaxial and even then it's not because of sound quality. It is because optical is immune to interference.

I'm not sure what DTS tracks some of you have been listening to but in my experience it has always been better than DD 5.1. Even when I accidentally forget to go to the menu and change to DTS I notice during the movie that it doesn't sound quite as good and that prompts me to go check .

Thanks for the help. I've picked up the DVD player and I can't tell a difference in the audio quality so far.

The reason why I got this cheapo player is cause it can play alot more formats than my old player, convert PAL to NTSC and it came region free out of the box.
