Please bear with me, this is all new to me so I'm more than a little on the ignorant side.
I have taped Robinson Crusoe from the TV using my Windows Media Center and my cable. The computer came with software on it called Sonic MyDVD. For the most part I've had success burning movies and tv shows but I had taped them at a lower quality. Well now Robinson Crusoe is at "good" instead of "fair" and even with editing out commercials, it's too big to burn to a disc. How do I compress the file size?
I hope this makes sense to someone. Thanks for your help.

I'm not familiar with MyDVD but is there a way to create the DVD on your hard drive even though it's too big? That way you could just shrink it with DVD Shrink.

I believe MyDVD allows you to burn the DVD to folders. Then you could do as Teegee suggests - compress it more with DVDShrink so it fits.

i really hate names like 'good' and 'fair'. doesn't tell you much...
when i 'tape' something from tv i save as avi and convert to mpeg2. i can fit 90 minutes at 6000 kbps. that's good quality (maybe overkill), so i guess you' should be able to fit a movie to cd. you may have so select a lower bitrate though (e.g. 5500 or 5000). to can use tmpegenc for this.Music was my first love, and it will be my last -
I downloaded the DVD shrink but it wouldn't let me pull in a file that is on my computer. So after reading the help file I downloaded a program called Daemon Tools but this is getting a little ridiculous. Isn't there an easier way? I just want my kids to be able to watch a movie on the regular TV instead of having to give up my computer to them.

It sounds like you have outputted to an ISO file. Daemon Tools can mount this ISO file so that your output appears like it is just another drive you can access through My Computer or Windows Explorer. It actually creates a virtual drive. Mount the ISO image using Daemon Tools, and then use DVDShrink, using the "Open File" button. Point it to the VIDEO_TS.IFO file on this virtual drive. THis can then Shrink the output down to fit on one disc.
As mentioned above, I'm sure there is a way to output to DVD FOlders instead of to an ISO image. If in doubt, Google it. -

I found that opening dvd files on the hard drive does NOT require the AUDIO_TS directory to be present. I haven't tried it without the VIDEO_TS directory being present. Just select OPEN FILES, then highlight the proper directory where VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS directories are located. Dvdshrink will open it just fine.

i think it's getting a little off topic here.
as i understand well, sara_laughs has a video file (not a dvd structure) which should be reencoded to fit on a dvd. so the steps to take are:
1) reencode the video file (i use tmpegenc for this)
2) use that file to author the dvd (i use dvdlab for this)
note: it may be needed to create an image with dvdlab and burn that with the software that came with your burner (in my case instant dvd).Music was my first love, and it will be my last
