  1. Based on the article from Cdr-info.com it looks like Double layer might be a problem. There is only 30% compatibility rate. Man that stinks. Also, the comment about drives making noises and then stopping sounds pretty scary.
    From Article:
It seems there are huge problems with DVD+R DL media as our short investigation showed. Most DVD Writers refused to recognize the DVD+R DL media. On the other hand, the newest LiteOn SOHW-812S didn't had any problems and read the whole disc flawlessly. It's interesting that even BenQ DW800A cannot properly recognize the DL media.

  3. Due to limited amount of DVD+R DL media, we haven't got the chance, for now, testing how the Booktype setting affects compatibility

  5. No need to be so defensive. Its really quite amazing that DL is even possible on current tech drives. It will be a matter of time before support for this new format is widespread. As for -R DL, who knows whats going on there... I would imagine that the futility of the format battle will finally dawn on the combatants. We can only hope that in the future there is no more +/- R/W, just R/W

  6. Too late. Blu-ray and HD-DVD are already going down this path.

  7. Just to throw in 2¢: Those of us who have some of the "cheapie-brand" settop players like some of the Apex models (500a/b/w/wm, 600A, 660, etc.) that use IDE readers as the loader, could swap 'em out in the future for one's that'll play DL+.

Example: I own two Apex 660s and a recently-acquired 600A w/ a dead loader (gives "NO DISC" regardless of media type). The crappy stock loaders in the 660's wouldn't recognize burned DVD media at all! So I shoehorned in PC readers and now they play everything w/ no troubles. The 600A is due to be revitalized as well.

So, say I acquired a DL+ burner, say, a year or so down the road and my Apex's won't play the media, I'd find IDE readers that WILL play it w/o trouble and put three into my players.

    Just a thought folks.
Like a flea circus at a dog show!
