  1. There is an article on Anandtech regarding the upcoming Sony DL burner. They show DVDInfoPro data for some Mitsubishi DL media they used for testing and the capacity shows only 7.96 GB. Here is a link: http://www.anandtech.com/storage/showdoc.html?i=2045&p=3. What gives?

  2. Notice: A new booktype: "DVD+R DL"

Changing it to "DVD-ROM" is probably essential in order to avoid logical error in DVD players.

  5. OK, correct me if I'm wrong, but don't commercially-pressed DVDs have 8.47g or 9,100,000,000 bytes?

And RabidDog, don't hassle me with your *sigh*s. That's what the forums are for, asking questions and the sharing of information.

  8. the cover of this month's eMedia mag has Verbatim's DL media proudly on display and it's printed with 8.65G capacity (and if you divide this by 1.024 you will have the capacity in gigaBYTES vs Gigs).

  12. Well lets start a count.. how many will search and how often will this question get re-asked?? one posting is enough.. More often than the one about capacity of a DVD-5 in GB or bytes.

  16. Would it also be logical to say that +RW9 media will be forthcoming? Then whatever the "minus people" come up with. Of course, I'd prolly give it 1-1½ years before a good supply of media and drives are available at reasonable prices (least I'll wait before buying one). Too much longer than that and they'll be starting to force HDTV & media upon us and the whole thing might be moot anyhow.

You can already buy a Sony dual layer burner for a mere $200.

  18. No I think DL media and writers are but a hairs breadth away.. and when they launch they will quiclky come down in price..far more so than SL. SL drives are commodity items now.. and DL is just a small adjustment rather than a giant leap for Burningkind.

When will software makers start reporting disc capacity using the correct terminology?

    Decimal mulitples: one gigabyte (1 GB) = 10^9 B = 1 000 000 000 B.
    Binary mulitples: one gibibyte (1 GiB) = 2^30 B = 1 073 741 824 B.

If they report a DVD disc capacity as 4.38, then they should use the correct label 'gibibyte' (GiB).

The price isn't bad but I wouldn't buy one right now since DL media would be hard to come by (not to mention expensive!) in quantity. Also notice it lists 12x SL ± burning! Gee, y'hardly see any 8x media, let alone 12x.

    I'm confused hehehe

Is the capacity of a pressed DVD9 the same as the new DVD+DL discs are is there any difference.

In short do I have to worry about a pressed DVD9 being just a bit too big to fit on a DVD+DL disc?
