  1. Tried searching and am probably using the wrong keywords here...

I have a 1100 meg AVI file that I would like to shrink to ~700MB. Is there a tool that can be used for this?

    Thanks.

There's lots of tools you can use. What kind of file is it?

XVID is already a pretty compressed file. What's the duration of the clip? It might already be maxed out and compressing it more will just make it look like shit.

Split the file to 2 discs, put it on a DVDR/miniDVDR, or convert it to mpg2 to author to DVDR.

Use the DVDRhelp Bitrate Calculator(select divx as type) to figure out the correct bitrate to use and use Virtualdub to set up a 2-pass encode. Set up the first pass and save but check off "add to job control", set up the second pass and plug in the bitrate, add to job control again and then go to File>Job Control and click start. You can find lots of Virtualdub guides by clicking on the link in this post. About mid-way down the page you'll see "guides for this tool".
