Even if I'm not using dual layer (or whatever you want to call it) for a while.

I'm glad I went with the Benq dw822a after reading what Sony is going to charge for there dual layer writer.

If this article is to be trusted, then the speed is also pretty sucky, especially for that price. In fact even if it burnt every kind of cheap media available - it's still overpriced.

  2. Then buy the LiteOn 832S instead. The Sony 700, as reported in the CDRLabs forum, is actually the LiteOn 832S. Actually, better yet, get a LiteOn 812S drive and upgrade it to a 832S. Looks like right now that the 832S is going to be first to market (BenQ doesn't count since their firmware upgrade is still months away).

Been kinda out of the loop for the last few weeks, any expected release date on the Liteon? or maybe preorders?

  4. People have been reporting preorders since a week ago. Test units were shipped out weeks ago, as well. Also, the first production post-testing firmware was completed nearly 2 weeks ago. Since it uses the exact same hardware as the 812S, the production's already there... all they have to do is load the new firmware, change some cosmetics, and that's it...

Anyway, long story short, it's expected in early May, IIRC.

And supposedly, the new 832S improves on single-layer burning over the 812S. Though DL is still reported to be a bit problematic, but many people are expecting DL problems from all of the first-generation drives... problem is, with the lack of DL media, it's hard to test.
