I know this has been discussed in the past but I can't seem to find any decent old topics in the search and maybe it's worth discussing again given the latest rev's. I know qulaity is a subjective matter so I am just interested in peoples experiences or preferences and not wanting to start any kind of flame war. Also, if anyone had snapshot pics of the same dvd done by both that would be fantastic info.
Personally I am using DVD2ONE and viewing my stuff on a 50" LCD TV and am quite pleased. I am always interested in the potential of improving my stuff. If you are viewing your conversion on anything less than a 50" TV I don't think you would notice a difference so it may not be worth your effort in posting. I think the larger TV's blow up the image enough that slight differences may be observed.
One other thing, I'm using DVD2ONE rev 1.0, is there a significant difference in quality from 1.0 to the latest rev. I'm kind of the additude if it works don't fix it, so I won't upgrade if the quality is similar.
Anyways, looking forward to opinions, experiences and preferences...
Thanks,
rhuala

I got DVD2ONE when it was still fairly new. In fact I don't think DVDShrink was even out just yet.
Anyways I've used both (always updating DVD2ONE to the newest version) and I prefer the output of DVD2ONE much better.
Also DVD2ONE handles "forced subs" much better. This is when you have for instance a movie that is mostly in English (for example) but parts of it are in another language. There will sometimes be a single English subtitle track that subtitles the ENTIRE movie but with "forced subs" the English subs ONLY come up when you need them (the non-English spoken parts of the movie). This way the user can use this option (usually default) or they can turn the subs "on" so that they get English subs for 100% of the movie.
DVDShrink is not very good at dealing with "forced subs" and usually you end up with no subs at all or 100% subs.
There have been some tweaks in the DVD2ONE compression engine so you might as well upgrade to the newest version which I think it currently 1.4.0 or 1.4.1 or something like that.
As for DVDShrink some people have reverted back to version 30Beta5 rather than any of the newer versions due to various "bugs" one of which is an overly "soft" image ... I should point out that this can even happen when no compression is used i.e., still image some parts and leave other parts at NO COMPRESSION but still the NO COMPRESSION comes out looking "soft" as compared to the original. Wierd!

I prefer DVD2one as well although I do use DVDshrink a lot. For me it is different from disc to disc. If I am shrinking just the movie and it is not too much of a compression or not a action picture with lots of fast motion, I will use DVDshrink to save time by shrinking straight from the disc. If it's a complete DVD or long movie, I use DVD2one.

Hi all.
rhuala2, why don't you make two backups of the same (demanding) DVD?
One using DVD2One - the other DVD Shrink - then simply compare them. -
You don't need our opinion if you are already happy with what you have....
Our eyes aren't the same & some people aren't picky about every little dot on the screen. -
On my 66cm widescreen tv I cannot tell the difference between DVDshrink and DVD2one.
I currently use DVD43 (a freeware product similar to Anydvd), DVD2one 1.4 and CopytoDvd 2.4. This combination gives me just about a one click solution to DVD backing up. Major advantage is that DVD2one is so damn fast compared to DVDshrink - although the DVD2one/CopytoDvd combo costs some money, but not much really.
DVDshrink with Nero or DVDdecrypter is also more or less a one click solution, but I really like DVD2one's speed and simple interface.
A factor to consider also is the quality of the original DVD. I find this to be a really important issue that many people overlook. Some dvd's are not great quality, so the backup copy will always be somewhat worse! -

Do you post crap just for the sake of posting crap??? I realize I don't NEED your opinion, but I hope you don't mind if I ASK for some peoples opinion??? *boggle* ... and yes I realize our eyes aren't all the same, thank you for pointing that out, you are a clever one aren't you... go pat yourself on the back for providing a response and give yourself 2 gold stars...
FulciLives, thanks for that awesome info on forced subs. I did not know that! .... always wondered how movies like Traffic were handled...

Could very well do and probably will... I just didn't want to re-invent the wheel and waste a bunch of my time. I figured this had been done to death already. The other thing I was hoping was that someone already picked weak points to try and exploit the differences like the dark underwater scenes in U-571, and analyzed the differences in color banding or some higher speed small images on dark backgrounds that can show rainbowing, although I guess this could be more attributed to TV technology then the encoding algorithm, but hey who knows...
Maybe I'll do some side by side comparisons and post my results, unless someone has already done this...helllo hello out there....
Love it when I waste a bunch of time then someone follows up with "been done already, here's the link..." *sigh*, I hate when that happens...

It's not a perfect review, but it gives you an idea and some screen comparisons. -

AarontheRipper, niceee. Nice to see it has been done already and done well. Thanks for the time saver, great info here, didn't realize DVD shrink was so poor...
"Everyone wants someone to do it for them...here's a newsflash for you...do it yourself !!! "
Your so full of crap it's ridicules... so you never ask for people opinions or preferences and do everything yourself. That's stupidest thing I have ever heard on any forum and I’ve heard an awful lot of useless garbage in my days. Go back and crawl under the rock where you came from, obviously your only intention here is to start a flame war… because every bit of your discussion is a waste of time...

"I was offended by how you talked to someone above so I thought I'd waste what meaningless time I have to scrutize your post and then try to take some useless and meanless jabs at you because I think someone out there actually cares what I have to say..."
... and yes my time is precious and AarontheRipper has proven how wasteful your post really was...

Never attacked you personally, I simply asked you to not be a jerk that's all... and you don't think how you "summarized" my thread wasn't being "offensive"... really
"Too many lazy people want somebody to do it for them and are willing to pay - unfortunately a reflection of society. "
I work 10-12 hours a day dude 5-6 days a week. If I can save my time by asking someone if they've already done a boring and tedious non learning task (I know exactly what to do and how to do it, it's simply a time sink) I will spend the time ASKING every single time. I'm sorry that you don't value the time in your life a bit more and sorry that you think this makes me lazy but honestly I think you are just being stubborn or foolish...
"I generally stay away from opinions and preferences, because I prefer to do it myself to form my own opinion. "
Too many people waste too much of their precious time doing useless boring tasks instead of spending the time with their families or friends or playing sports. Would I rather spend 10 hours turning out boring data to something that has already been solved while learning nothing... or spend that time with my wife or playing roller hockey or going to the gym. To me this is the real poor reflection of society...
Once you have a bit more fun in your life, and a little less free time maybe you'll understand where I'm coming from...

I love DVD2ONE since I feel its offers a very good balance between speed and quality. But I only use it when doing movie-only backups. I wouldn't use it for a full compression unless it was something like anime, porn or if I was really pressed for time. For full backups I usually use Intervideo DVD Copy 2 Platinum.
