  1. Just got an ADVC-100 and cannot seem to capture from VCR.

Using composite connection from VCR to ADVC-100 and DV-Firewire cable to PC.

Using Ulead, WinDVD or Win Moviemaker the blue light on the front changes to analog but none of the software timers move. No matter how long you run the capture for, a 64kb avi file is saved.

I'm attempting PAL capture, so jumpers 1+6 are ON, the rest are OFF.

Firewire port in onboard an Abit IS7, TI chipset.

    Any thoughts much appreciated.

Are you getting a picture on the screen with WinDVD? I assume your computer sees the device and it's listed on 'My Computer'? Check your Firewire cable. The instruction book is crap, but you might check their forums. You can also do a search here for ADVC-100 and find most of the common problems.

You may want to use a dedicated firewire pci card instead of using a firewire port from your motherboard. There have been reports that using a dedicated firewire pci card is better when using canopus advc-100.

A long shot, but there's a post on the Canopus forum about the TI chipset.
It involves the older chips and is probably irrelevant but will introduce you to the official forum.
    I've used it; it's excellent.

  5. Windows finds the ADVC-100 as 'AVC Compliant DV Tape Recorder/Player' Is that as it should be ?

Yes I've seen the info about the Ti chipset problem, but thought it irrelevant because my board is only a year old. Maybe they used on old Ti chipset ?

I'm going to borrow a dedicated Firewire card and hope that slolves the problem.

Thanks to all for your input.

  6. Hooked up ADVC-100 to a Hi-8 camera via composite and success

I'm still puzzzled as to why it won't capture from a VCR via composite.

There's no VCR setting surely ??

  7. If it's a commercial videotape, wouldn't the problem be Macrovision?

  10. Think I've twigged it.

The scart/composite converter was video IN and not switchable.

Ordered one, that should sort it I hope.

My other VCR has composite and is IN only.

Does S-Video make much of a difference over scart to composite ??

Yes, I'm sure it would, if your source/VCR is S-VHS that is.

FWIW, I capture with an ADVC-50 (internal version of the ADVC-100) through the internal firewire port on my Abit IS7's motherboard with no problems.
