Hello,
I'm getting ready to burn a DVD I've authored and I'm trying to debate whether I should use DVD+R or DVD-R discs. I'm not sure which one I should use. I'd like the DVD to be able to work on DVD Players as well as play on DVD-ROM drives. I'm using Adobe Encore to author the DVD. Any tips on this?
Thanks
Foo

Click on "What Is DVD" in the upper left corner. Hope that helps you decide. Just so you know, there's bound to be some player that simply won't play one of the two discs.
-
And some players wont play any of the two. None of the 2 choices are 100%. Very old players is more likely to play -R, but no big difference.
-
Old Sony's won't play any R disc....not even CD-R. Burn one of each and see which one your player likes best.

What does Hollywood use???
Just curious 8)

A lot of fairly recent players, such as Toshiba's SD-1300, will only support -R. Which is yet another reason I won't be buying another Toshiba.
All other things being equal, the DVD Consortium doesn't like the +R formats. Ergo, if you have a player that plays +R, get behind +R. -
Hollywood use pressed discs
DVD-R was first and the discs used to be cheaper than DVD+R. Now this is not an issue, both cost the same.
So use what you have. Just keep in mind to use good quality media. A search / reading here: https://www.videohelp.com/dvdmedia can really help on this -
I would recommend maybe buying and burning one of each and try them out on the stand-alone players that you’re going to be using and see which gives you the best results. Keep in mind that it makes a difference what software you use to author and burn with as well.

I'm authoring with Adobe EncoreDVD and burning using Roxio Easy CD & DVD Creator 6.

Some retailers sell sample kits of dvd's, about ten, all different, use trial and error to see what works best for you.
-
What software is recommended for burning DVDs (instead of using Roxio) ?

Nero, Record now max, dvd decrypter. Check out the tools section and then burn.

Use a PLUS R because Plus means a good thing...Like "It's a plus!.
A -R is bad because its a minus and thats a negative.
Also +R with Blue and which isnt that whenever if going hey considered pancakes justified not wow did u see that. -

I repeat: -R is supported by the DVD Consortium (don't call it the DVD Forum, "forum" implies communication and exchange of ideas, not the "we talk you listen" that the DVD Consortium comes out with). After the forced copyright messages, region codes, and the "no black bars is good" theme that Toshiba, who claim to be leading the Consortium, come up with, I love to give the Consortium the finger wherever possible. Whether it is by removing the copyright messages entirely from my discs, or by using +R, I don't care. As soon as I acquire a player that plays +R, I won't be using another -R unless +R is suddenly no longer made.

Is it me or did jaxxboss' post equal total confusion?

I think you've gotten your answer regarding -R/+R. I also use Encore DVD and have successfully burned -R/-RW/+RW. My DVD player seems to play them all without a problem (including DVD-RAM).
As to authoring tools like Encore, this is highly subjective. I've tried out the following:
DVD-Complete -- Was Dazzle, now Pinnacle Systems. Intuitive. Rather outdated now but very feature-full in its day. Good set of templates.
Ulead DVD-Workshop -- Very intuitive. However, Ulead has neglected to include functionality that I deem essential (ability to allow the author to specify menu-button navigation. One must rely on Workshop's guess. I've even had it skip menu-buttons altogether). Very good set of templates.
Media-Chance DVD-Lab -- Ok. Need 3rd party encoder. Inexpensive. Mildly intuitive. Good set of templates.
Sonic ReelDVD -- Mildly intuitive. Need 3rd party encoder. pretty feature-full.
Adobe Encore DVD -- Mildly intuitive. Version 1.0 is rather quirky. 1.5 havn't tried yet. When combined with other Adobe products (i.e. PhotoshopCS, AfterEffects, etc.), this product is the most feature-full of them all in my opinion.
All of these authoring tools have trial versions (time-terminating).

I buy whatever is on sale in the bulk pack.
They all play in my standalone, so I don't care.
If you have a fussy player, that NEEDS something special, go ahead and pay more for fancy blueish, made in japan, plus R's.Cheers, Jim
My DVDLab Guides -
Look to the left and go to LISTS-> DVD Players
And see what your player is capable of playing.
All DVD-Roms should be able to play both discs.
Me, I buy whatever is on sale at the time. Never had issues with either. -

foochuck,
If you bought a BenQ 800 series or Lite-On 800 series DVD writer you can set the booktype on +R to DVD-ROM which will work on 98% of all DVD players.
