Phillips DVDR 72/75 /80 (USA Models) are recording in NTSC only!

    I conducted series of tests..
The manual states each one should record in both PAL and NTSC.
What really happens is the PAL input signal (composite, S-video) gets automatically converted to NTSC and the recording on the DVD is really NTSC signal.
I guess Phillips designers have mistakenly (if not they are very silly) put the PAL/NTSC converter component on the video input instead on the video output.
That’s why you cannot convert PAL DVD to NTSC and watch it on NTSC TV.

Now I start to regret that I returned my Cyberhome DVDR 3500, it seemed to be much more practical for multi-system use. It was converting the signal anyway you want, and the 2X speed resolution was visibly superior to the Phillips 2X+ resolution. I can notice tiny, but visible pixelation on Phillips 2X+ resolution(2.5 Hrs).
I do not want to waste 1 DVD for 1 HR of recording only with my Phillips to get the same resolution which I get on
On my Cyberhome DVDR 3500 2HRS MODE .

    Anybody else noticed this?

    1) The Philips DVD recorder will allow you to record PAL or NTSC, but you cannot mix PAL and NTSC recordings on the same disc.

    2) No it doesn't. The input signal determines what format the DVD will be in. So if your input signal is PAL, then the DVD will be recorded in PAL format.

    3) The recorder cannot convert PAL <--> NTSC on either input or output.

I think you are wrong ( at list for DVDR 72 (USA) Costco model which I tried with).
I send PAL tru the front S-video in, and right away I see a color picture on my NTSC TV.
I am 100% sure, I tried with and without disc in the recorder, still the same think.
I tried also tru the composite video input – it gets converted to NTSC immediately.
So the recording on the disc is always in NTSC.
Not sure about the 75/80/9X models but I think the only difference with them is the Hard Drive.

  4. I had model 75/17 couple of weeks some time ago and I can confirm what Gil T Pleasure is writing.

  5. van_d_man reported about pixelation for the M2 recording mode for the Philips DVDR72. The Philips live chat support gave me a link to their "firmware" which is supposed to fix this problem. It is accompanied by a readme file supposedly. I haven't tried this "fix" yet, but plan to. I also would like to know if others find this fix useful. Here is the quote from Philips:

Please see link below which contains instructions on how to apply the firmware to the recorder: http://www.p4c.philips.com/cgi-bin/dcbint/dcbint?lang=eng&s=ccc&mode=search&searchstring=DVD R72&country="
