  1. I know this sounds extremely wierd, but there are 4 DVD titles that I beleive will never be released in Region 1, they are however available in Region 2 PAL format. Finding a player that can handle Region 2 is not so tough, and converting it using DVD backup and DTOX isn't so tough, but apparently Europe has numerous TV's that can handle both PAL & NTSC, but they are few and far between here, and besides, I'm still making payments on my SONY WEGA!!! Is it possible, no matter how complex, to rip these DVD's to SVCD, and then re-encode them to NTSC or directly from PAL to NTSC without going to SVCD? I know however I do it, I'll lose some quality, but the extras on these particular discs are well worth it to me.
Or failing THAT, can I rig some sort of video output from my computer to my TV, because I can view Region 2 PAL just fine on my Mac.
Failing THAT, is there any kind of signal converter or some such wierd creation that will convert PAL to NTSC between my player and TV?
If this isn't possible on the Mac, maybe there's a PC kinda person that knows how to do it using PC tools?

I think I read on here somewhere once that you can pop your R2 disc into your R1 Mac, open it with VLC so the system grabs the key, then use DVDBackup to decrypt and copy the disc. If thats possible then you can use DVD2OneX to crunch it. You'd end up with a region-free PAL DVD.

have you checked any of the above sites to make sure there isn't an ntsc version any where? there could be a non-region 1 ntsc somewhere, which would be easier to just take off the region coding than converting pal to ntsc.. also awhile ago on some forum there was a lot of talk about some tv's with component inputs could handle pal, through the component inputs, don't wega's have components ins? you might see if it works on your tv. if need more info you might ask over at the avsforum.com message boards.

also a tv out on your monitor card should do an okay job of converting it, you might see some weirdness like strobing, but i think the aspect ratio might be correct. but i've never tried this so i'm not postive.

and yet another thing is, are you sure your playe can't convert them internallly, if you removed the region coding? also, alot of dvd players that are only ntsc dvd players, can play pal vcd's and svcd's, woth no problems.

  4. The flicks I'm looking for are some fairly obscure classics from the 30's and 40's, and sadly, don't appear to be headed towards R1 release anytime soon. I'm going to see if I can test a TV out card (borrowed from a friend), cause I've got plenty of power to spare, but driving a 27 inch WEGA might be beyond it's ability.
I've lost all my documentation on my player and TV though, the player's a NS315 Sony, and the TV's a base 27 inch. If anyone knows the tricks on setting those up to view this, or if they can tell me if it's even possible or not, that'd be mighty helpful!
Of course, I could always use this as an excuse to go buy a 23 inch Cinema Display.....;-P

not sure if your a fan of them or not, but APEX dvd players can be gotten for a little over 60$ and many can be "upgraded" to region free with a simple firmware upgrade.
I have one that im fond of the AD-5131 its quite nice and so far handles both Region 1 and 2 disks with no problmes (all i can get my hands on)
but im sure it could do other regions as well.
