  1. Hey,

Ive burnt about 50 dvds in the last few weeks, but the other day i got Head of State and Love Actually. Ive never had any problems, but all of a suden i tried ripping these movies, and when i analyse them on DVD shrink its taking like 5 minutes (used to take about 1 minute). The weird thing is, it takes ages to analyse the Menu's, and once they are done, it goes perfect when analysing the actual movie. Once the analysis is finished, it has the Menus at 600Mb!

The when i try to encode the movie, the menus also take ages, and then the movie goes at normal speed.

    Anyone got any ideas?

some DVD's (e.g. Disney) put around 500mb+ of black video in the VIDEO_TS.VOB

this only compresses by around 50-60% so it's wasting 200-30Mb when you use it with DVDShrink. It also takes ages to analyze and compress this black video

I've known this since I came across it early last year but as I stripped everything I didn't want, it didn't really affect me. This is one of the way the movie companies could render a lot of transcoders useless by filling the complete DVD-9 with black video as they will have a dramatic effect on the overall quality as most do not have menu title stripping capabilities. I can't believe they haven't realised it for themselves :P

another way to cripple some transcoders is to refer to any video the IFO that will not actually play and again it will waste valuable space. Universal put 200-300mb of crap in the VIDEO_TS as a watermark but it isn't referenced in the IFO's so some transcoders just ignore it
