OK, I'm going to try not to express my aggravation too much as I am a total newbie here.

I downloaded the a101 firmware for the LG GSA-4081 from The Firmware Page mentioned in the sticky. I'm, of course
a little nervous about flashing the firmware of my darling, brand-new-out-the-box burner
so I want to read the directions like everyone always stresses so heavily right?

To my extreme aggravation, they're in Korean!!! ??? Well...I assume it's Korean anyway but
I really wouldn't know as I can't read it! (Oh no there I go)

Does anyone know why in the hell there isn't there even a mention of ANY DVD burner at the LG uk website
    http://gb.lgservice.com/gcsc/b2c/hpi/main ? or the LG usa website http://us.lgservice.com/index_b2c.jsp ?

If you were to look on either of those two websites, you would have no idea that the company even manufatures
a DVD writer. I hope they get their act together.

Anyway, that's the end of my rant. I apologize. Maybe I should just get some sleep & look again in the morning.
Maybe the firmware will magically show up on their site.

But just in case it doesn't, does anyone know where I could find instructions for flashing the LG GSA-4081 firmware
in English? I'm sure it's simple, but I don't want to turn my new writer into an overpriced paperweight.

    My current firmware is a100.

Many thanks & GREAT forum BTW.

  2. They seem to list their DVD writers under CD-RW in the support area. Unfortunately there is no update off their site for the 4081 only the 4040 which I believe is discontinued.

Looking at the downloads it seems like the procedure for flashing would be the same as the 4040. So I suggest downloading that update to get the instructions and then using the 4081 file. It's pretty simple as they use windows updaters, rather then having to boot to dos.

Here's the link to the Canadian site. Just click device driver then CD-RW.

    (no manual though)

Thanks a lot for the info Billyseven. It was very helpful.

However, I just got off the phone w/service from LG & was advised that there is no firmware upgrade available for the 4081 which I find a little confusing since there are some threads talking of an A101 firmware update at The Firmware Page. Those threads are very recent though. Maybe the tech just hasn't been informed yet. Hmmmmm.

  4. If the update was off the Korean site maybe it hasn't reached the english ones yet. I don't think there would be a problem using a Korean update on and English bought drive.

  5. I did try to flash my dvd burner with that firmware update. The firmware on your drive is the 100 version and not the a101 version. So you can flash it. My question to you is it work now as it is. If it is don't do it. My drive wasn't working and I tried to update it. It failed to update. SO it didn't work before the flash and maintains that same lack of status.
    My rig is as follows:

  6. I too have recently bought myself the LG 4081B - my first DVD writer

It's got the A100 revision firmware.

The A101 firmware update is available from:

    http://www.lgelectronics.co.uk/
    Select Device Driver.
    Then select CD-RW.

    And there it is GSA-4081A101(ew).zip

    http://gb.lgservice.com/jsp/common/download.jsp?DOC_ID=KRSWL000012814&FILE_NAME=KRSWL 000012814-b1-a1.zip&ORIGINAL_NAME_b1_a1=GSA-4081A101(ew).zip&FILE_GUBUN=B

    Complete with the English ReadMe.

I'm gonna put off upgrading my A100 to the new A101 firmware until i need to upgrade to say support a certain media.

If it aint broke - don't fix it!

    Martin.

  8. Are all you guys having no problem reading DVD's, especially movies and commercial DVDs? I've had problems with some movies and some workout videos I've bought. Some work no problem and look/sound just fine, others won't even read... I'd appreciate any thoughts on this.

    Thanks,

  9. Gooberoo,
I would recommend your own posting on this topic. I make sure you have the codex loader for your particular viewer/player. You might be running into problems playing due to the discs encryption. If you could post your new topic for this issue and I ask more specific questions.
