  1. Can anyone offer a clue as to why the audio and video from a VHS source might be recorded out of synch (only by a fraction of a second, but annoying) on an Apex DRX-9000? I've tried selecting both RAM and LPCM audio outputs. The original VHS tape is synched fine, and copy protection isn't involved. I've also made the firmware upgrade to the machine, though I doubt that's even remotely related.

I'm using a composite video input...the video recorder I'm using isn't equipped with an S-video out. I don't seem to have this problem when recording a TV signal (which IS connected to the Apex with an S-video link).

What am I doing wrong? Do I need to find a video recorder with an S-video out or do I just need to pass on the Apex and buy up?

Mine works fine. Done at least 100 tapes on it since I got it.
I'd say look at bad wires, miswiring or the source.

I've seen out-of-sync VHS tapes. It's crazy, but exists.

  4. Well, I solved that problem (and others) by taking the Apex back and spending the refund on another DVD recorder, this time a Phillips. I've had it now for about 2 months without any problems at all. Regarding that sync problem, I'm of the opinion now that it was likely something I did (or didn't do), and not the recorder. If you're happy with the Apex, I'd just double-check the cabling first of all. Be very sure that all in's and out's are properly connected. When recording, make sure you're monitoring the correct audio/video outs from the recorder (with my setup, I can monitor the video out of the DVD recorder and the audio out of the source at the same time when I need to be monitoring the video and audio out of the recorder). If all is good and you're getting out of sync problems with the recording, itself, I have no idea what could be happening.
