  1. I've been reading up on DVD-VCD and DVD-SVCD on the website. The idea intrigues me, but I haven't seen any mention of DVD-CVD. Is it even possible? I have a few things I'd like to encode using the variable bitrate requirement of CVD/SVCD, but I'd like to use CVD since the blockiness doesn't show up as much as SVCD in the lower bitrates.

What I'm going for is being able to fit about 510~530 minutes of video on a DVD but with as little quality loss as possible, hopefully at VCD quality. (or higher) I'd also like this to be something that would play in most DVD players. I'm not sure if anything like this is possible, but hey, it's worth a shot.

So yeah, is DVD-CVD possible? (and playable?)

    DVD-CVD = HALF-D1 DVD in most cases.

    A DVD-CVD would be a DVD-SVCD by all rights.

  3. So the CVD resolution is supported by the DVD standard then? Score.

Now how about the variable bitrate stuff? Is there any way to get the bitrate down so that I can fit 510~530 minutes of video on one DVD-5? (and still have it playable on a standalone player that is)

  4. AFAIK cvd is a valid DVD spec resolution.. so it should be playable in all dvd players. However if you author and burn it as a dvd you lose the 15% extra space you get from mode2 burning. Can dvd's be burnt in mode2??
CVD should be mpeg2 @ 356x576 probably around average bitrate 1500-3500k (whatver fits your requiremnts). If you burn a cvd to a Cdr you can burn it as a svcd and it will be recognized as such. I think 510mins sound too much to get on one disk tho (8.5 hours) it might work tho.

Use a bitrate calculator. 530 minutes on a dvd5 = average video bitrate 950kbit/s with 192 kbits audio. That is kinda low for cvd resolution, I would then try vcd resolution.

RabidDog: no you can't burn mode2 on dvd.

950kbit/s will play on a standalone player? I was under the impression that anything under 1000 was generally a no-go. Huh, good to know.

What bitrate calculator did you use, and where can I get it? It'd make my life a bit easier.
