  1. I have a problem when I make a DVD with TMPG DVD Author. When i play the dvd back on my pioneer dvd player and TV, the sides of the video are chopped off. However, when I use my computer software player and DVD drive, the sides are not chopped off and the picture looks the normal size. What is wrong? Is it jsut my dvd player or somthing i am doing in making it?

  2. How big is the chopped off area? If it's just few mm then it's normal. TV cannot display the entire image as your PC screen. Most authoring tools (not sure about TDA) will mark you a safe area due to this.

Sounds like overscan. Normal overscan on TVs is a lot more than a few mm.

  5. It depends on the size of the TV set. I meant few mm as an example. Few inches on a 21" is hell of a lot. How big is your TV?

Do you have a 4:3 TV with the DVD Player set to output a 16:9 signal. Check you setup menu in the DVD player.

  7. the TV is about 36 inches and yes i have tried all the different settings on the DVD player menu with no change in result. the MPEG output is 4:3 anyways i think. What is overscan and how can it be fixed? Does it happend on all TVs?

  8. You can't fix overscan and it happens on all TVs. It's not something to worry about but in your case I don't think it's overscan. Few inches, even though you have a 36" TV and proportionally the overscan would be bigger, is a lot. Is the chopped off area only left and right? Does the picture otherwise look OK, i.e. it's not stretched?

  9. yea the chopped off area is on both sides - and it is about 3-4 inches. the pictures does otherwise look quite normal

  10. In that case it seems to me that you are playing a 16:9 video and your DVD player is either set for 4:3 pan&scan or you've authored the DVD that only allows pan&scan (not letterboxed) on a 4:3 display.

When you play the video on your PC is it almost twice as wide comparing to the height? If so, then it's a 16:9 video.
