I am about to create my first DVD-video. From the tons of info, I have gathered, that for the PAL format, MPEG-2 or LPCM audio is mandatory, with Dolby AC-3 and other formats optional.

That is, when creating a PAL DVD I don't have to bother with AC3 audio codecs, but can get away with plain mpeg-2 audio, such as in the Lame codec.

    Did I get that right?

  2. One of your audio streams must be LPCM or AC3 for 100% compatability. Most newer DVD standalone players are capable of handling MPEG Layer 2 and MP3 (if yours can play MP3 files then you can use MP3). However, for guaranteed compatability with all players go with either LPCM or AC3.

Edit...I just remembered you said PAL...I am in NTSC land...Not sure if there is a difference in Audio format requirements...sorry
No, I'm from Iowa. I only work in outer space.

  3. Up until very recently European spec DVD players were required to support stereo Mp2 audio. Even though I believe this requirement has now been relaxed you would be very unlucky to find a European Player that does not support mp2.
