I'm new to this and I've checked the technical Q's. And I'm still left wondering what the real difference between the different formats are. When I open TMPGEnc I get the choice of all these different templates and I'm frankly confused. Is there a page that will explain them in terms a laymen like myself can relate too. Thanks so much.

PAL and NTSC refer to different TV systems.
If you live in North America or Japan, your source will probably be in NTSC and your will be using NTSC TVs. Thus, you should use the NTSC template.
If you live in Europe, Asia, Australia, New Zealand (that is, rest of the world), your source will probably be in PAL and you will be using PAL (or PAL-like) TV system. Thus, you should use the PAL template.
