Is this feasible?

I have been attempting to make a compilation disk from my hard drive of clips and I was using Windows movie maker to cut, add transitions, and convert exported project to an AVI file. I was attempting to use TMPGEnc to encode the file to MPEG-2. After 10 hours the file was completed. Following the instructions I've found throughout this site, I was attempting to use IF0EDIT, but it's asking for a .m2v file?

In TMPGEnc I used the settings:
Stream Type: MPEG 2
resolution:720 x 480
aspect: 1:1 (VGA)
frame rate: 29.97 fps
rate control mode: 2 pass variable
Format: NTSC with interlaced checked
Motion search: Super high
everything else was left alone.

The plan, or shall I say the dream, was to use IFOEDIT and then be able to burn the results using Recordnow. Am I in the right direction or is moviemaker confliting with another process?

Use TMPGEnc to demux the MPEG-2 file (hopefully it is DVD-compliant) into .m2v and .mp2 files. Change the file extension on the mp2 file to .mpa. Proceed to IfoEdit.

Just to clear up any confusion. I found an old freeware version of TMPGEnc that is strictly an MPEG Encoder. This is my first attempt at this aspect of video. I know how to backup my DVD's, but was attempting to start compiling tv series and burn them onto DVD as opposed to purchasing them, ie Alias. I am experimenting with a compilation of clips from my hard drive. How else can I author the video (freeware) if not by IFOEDIT? Has everything I explained in my previous post possible? Windows movie maker is really easy edit and make transitions. If this software is not recommended, what would you suggest. I already used TMPGEnc. How do I demux? The instrcutions I followed stated that the stream type needed to by video and audio. Are you sauing I should've selected just video; if so, where would the audio come from-confusion!!!

p.s. what's with the well regulated militia... (second amendment)?

You can find mux/demux in File>MPEG Tools, if you're talking about version 12a beta. Just unlock the template next time, select video only. Or save a new template. Best to not let TMPGEnc mess with your audio, it's too easy to handle that with other (free) programs, e.g. ffmpegGUI.

Apart from IFOEdit, dvdauthorGUI is the only freeware authoring program I'm aware of. It's not bad at all, and is capable of audio/motion menu, multiple title sets, chapters, etc. But your elementary streams must be m2v and mp2, no other. Unless the latest version has changed that.

windows movie maker is decent if you want to create small clips say 600kbit /s but i have found that WMV9 codec butchers the video even on the highest setting

never actually go into wmv fomat
hope it does cos setting a project up in windows movie maker is piss easy but tmpeg or virtual dub are far better encoding

im guessing you currently have avis recorded off tv and you want to cut out the credits and possibly adverts which you can stick on a dvd and then play back in an external dvd player

you can use virtual dub/nandub to cut and join the video so all that is left is an avi which has just the footage you want to put on dvd this should take about 10 minutes

then the avi can be converted to mpeg 2 using tmpeg

this file i know for sure can then be burnt as a svcd
i dont have a dvd writer yet but based on my limited knowledge about creating dvds iwas under the impression that you can burn mpeg 2 files onto dvd and it will run in external player



easiest method ( assuming series is currently available on dvd)
buy alias on dvd off ebay copy the dvds
sell alias on ebay overall itll only cost a couple of quid and will save you a lot of time and give you perfect video

For authoring and dvd construction you really need a proper package something like tmpgenc dvd author or ulad studio.. I think both of these have trial versions. Look at the recommendations in the tool list.
