  1. I wanted to back up some old vhs movies onto dvd, and just purchased the kworld x-pert DVD Maker USB2.0. For $50 I am pleased with the capture process and quality; the files capture as AVI which play well with no skip or lapse on the windows media player. The next process converts the AVI into the file type of my choice (almost), I have tried a couple including MPEG2, they all play fine. The final step of the process burns a dvd from the created file: so far, abject failure. In theory the software does everything necessary to get the files on disc including authoring, but none of my experiments with conversion have produced a DVD that is recognized by a standalone or my pc.

On another front, I have had success burning discs using IMG Tool to create ISO files out of VIDEO_TS folders full of VOB files, and then burning the ISO files to disc, that works beautifully.

Sooooo, my so-called mind is wondering, is there any simple process to convert an MPEG or AVI file into an ISO file, which I am sure would burn just fine? Barring that a way to turn mpeg2 into VIDEO_TS folders? I use dvd shrink to create those folders for dvd burning, but it doesn't want to open the file types I've created out of my vhs. Or does anyone have the solution to why my discs are not playing?? I'm getting a little tired of creating $1.50 irridescent purple frisbees and drink coasters.

  2. DVD is simply a MPEG-2 file, only difference is that its resolution is different, and of course the bitrate. But you cannot simply convert an MPG -> ISO because for DVDS, u need to author it. When authoring it, it makes a VIDEO_TS which inside the .VOB files and so forth are there, and it creates an empty AUDIO_TS folder. It has to do auth authoring for DVD, no way around it plus its not a big deal... What I suggest is the following....

Get TMPGEnc DVD Author, load the mpeg-2 (dvd file), and create your menus and chapters and whatnot, and then author it, that way u get a full compliant DVD with ur choice of neat features.

MPG --> ISO = no good
MPG -> DVD FOLDER -> ISO = works fine

that extra step shouldnt hassle you that much!

P.S. I think what ur reffering to is VCD/SVCD, with those u can create a direct ISO file and burn, but its not DVD
