    Simple question:
Gonna buy a dvd player and want to know what the quaility difference (if any) is when using a good capture card @ 352x288, insted of ripping the dvd to the hd and converting to avi.

  2. Even if you have a really good capture card, it probably won't look quite as good as a DVD rip.

But I will be converting the clips to vcd format anyway so why should there be a difference in quailty? Are tv tuner cards bad?

  4. Try it out yourself. The difference is HUGE.

    Think about the process:
DVD rip is an all digital conversion process.

DVD capture involves several digital to analogue and then analogue to digital conversions. Even the best capture cards won't be able to compensate -- and definitely not a TV capture card.

As an analogy, think of which of the following is the best way to do a screen capture?
    1. use a tool on your PC (e.g., press "PrnScr" key) or
    2. get out your camera and take a photo and then scan that photo into your PC

    Regards.

  5. Keep in mind if the difference is worth the time. With a MPEG2 encoder card you get a MPEG2 movie or program in a 1 to 1 record time, 90min. program, 90min. to get a MPEG2 ready to burn as a SVCD.
Gonna do a rip, better give yourself anwhere from 12-24 hours of computer time to get it ready for a VCD or SVCD CD-R and the slower your computer the longer it will take, if you are gonna do rips better have a Pent. 3 or AMD Athlon 1 gig or better unless you want to wait a loonngggg time to get it finished.
