Will most of the external dvd writers work with my laptop?

And I would highly recommend Firewire over USB2. USB works most of the time, Firewire almost always works. If you don't have Firewire on board, cardbus Firewire cards are inexpensive. If your external box has both, even better, you have options if one filetype won't work for you.

You may also be able to use "S Video" ports, assuming you have them on both.
