  1. DVDs are encoded with a Region Code. So are DVD players. Your DVD player must have the same Region Code capability or it will not play the disc.

    If you author a DVD as region-free, it sets the Region Code to 0 and the disc will play on any DVD player.

    I believe you can also hack DVD player firmware to create a region-free DVD player as well.

    The purpose of having regions is so that commercial DVD's sold in one area cannot easily be sold and shipped to another. Lots of reasons why they do that....marketing mainly, because of different prices and release dates.

    BTW, hacking some DVD players can be as easy as a few clicks of the remote control.
