I used the hacked firmware on my A05 for a long time. Actually still do its just not my primary burner now. Anyway it worked great, I just make sure its been out a few weeks before I apply anything new.

  4. I also have hacked firmware on my 105, but remember that all hacked firmware are not created equal. Make sure that it has been checked out by quite a few people and not just for a day or two. It took me a while to make the decision, but I love ripping at 7 or 8x and burning g03s at 2x.

  6. I don't advocate hacked firmware - the manufacturers put a write strategy for each disc in there for a reason, and I can't be bothered with inconsistent burn results.

I rip from a DVD-ROM, which is much faster than even the hacked firmware for my writer, only cost about £25, and most importantly didn't invalidate my warranty. I also have to maintain traceability in my job, and hacked firmware is not approved.

If you really must write every disc at the highest speed your burner will write at and you're happy to verify each batch of discs you put through it, then away you go. Otherwise it's a no brainer. I suggest a DVD-ROM every time.

I have been using the hacked version of the 1.07 for the 106d and it works flawlessly. the only thing the hack changed was it unlocked my drive so I can rip pressed discs at 12.2x (speed readout on DVD Decrypter). I can get a full DVD-9 disk decrypted in about 10 minutes or so. Here is a link where you can get the firmware I am using.

    Enjoy!!
The real answer lies in completely understanding the question!

I only use hacked firmware for my TOSHIBA DVD-ROM's 1612 & 1712. I only use my PLEXTOR 708A & LITEON 411S for burning dvds. I let my TOSHIBA''s do the dvd ripping.

To DTSL06> The Plextor 708a firmware hack you mentioned from The Dangerous Brother's website does it unlock rip speed or region free? I'm not wanting to hack my Plextor but I'm curious as to what the hacked firmware is able to do on the drive.

Ya'll know what im gonna say....GO FOR IT!!
    I have always trusted NIL,Flashman & crew. They know what they're doing. 107D RPC-1, 12xrip, 8x4all ppsssssshhheeeit!
Before this, i had a 104 and used their firmwares as well, not 1 problem. Like above posts said, u gotta decide if its what u want and need. Sure you take risks but there are benefits as well. I think DVD burners are so cheap now, its ridiculous anyways. But thats just me

  14. When my Pioneer A04 was my main burner, I had NIL's 2x4All firmware, which I had great results with. At the time I was using BeAll disks exclusively, which were not "2x certified" but DVDInfo showed them as 2X disks. Since 4X disks have come way down in price, I flashed back to official Pioneer firmware on that drive.

On my new NEC 2500A, I have the region-free and rip speed unlock firmware. I have not been able to find an "8X4All" firmware for this drive, which I probably won't flash with anyway, 8X Z-CLV only saves me 2-3 minutes.

Drive manufacturers only put out firmware so often, and they don't account for every brand / speed of media. Not to mention that new media comes out way beyond when they stop updating firmware. If I'm not mistaken, plenty people get inconsistent burn results with official firmware.

I use NIL's 2x4all on my 105 and I'm glad to have it. I have quite a few Princo and KHypermedia 1x discs that I'd like to use up, but I don't want to spend an hour burning every disc and it does burn them perfectly fine at 2x consistently. It also gives me 12x rip speed which comes in handy when I'm in a hurry. But if I'm not, I save the wear and tear on my burner and use my DVD-ROM.
Nothing can stop me now, 'cause I don't care anymore.

  16. i have a pioneer 107d and use the hacked firmware and only use grade a Ritek discs. I can happily burn at 4x,6x and 8x speed. As a test I burned the same film on 3 different discs at the 3 different speeds and cannot see a fault in any of them.
Warranties are a crock of shit anyway - I'm sure that if you return a dead drive the last thing they do is look at the firmware!! It happens so rarely that they'll just ship a new one straight out of the door i bet.
