They're not out yet, but both Sony and Panasonic (or maybe it was Phillips - nah, probably Panasonic) have announced dual layered DVD burners, but they aren't going to be shipping for a while.
I like systems, their application excepted. (George Sand, translated from French), "J'aime beaucoup les systèmes, le cas d'application excepté."

Out in the rest of the forums, there are many threads about DL disks and burners. And the first DL things will be +R format.

Verbatim is shipping +DL media in spring2004 but not widely available for about 5 monthes. Sony drives will be out then to internal-DRU-700A and external usb2 and firewire DRX-700UL.

Has Verbatim indicated a price-point for dual-layer +R media? Because you can get single-layer 4x +R media right now for $1 a disc ... so if it's more than $2 ... I'm gonna stick with my stone-age 2x -R burner .. .even though its getting increasingly harder to find 2x -R media for less than $2 a disc.

  7. I assume you mean that vendors are driving prices down on 4X media these days instead of 2X? Why not just use the 4X variety, since they are getting quite a bit cheaper, even for the premium brands?

But your point that DL discs are going to be prohibitively expensive for awhile is worth mentioning a few times.

I'm excited, but it's gonna be at least a year before I can afford to upgrade.

I'm just saying I went to buy my trusty TDK 2x DVD-R the other day and they were back to $2 per disc, while those lousy 4x Imation DVDs were less than $1 per disc. I was pissed.

I can't seem to get my external DVD burner to accept any patch to upgrade it for use with 4x media. If anyones gotten a patch to work on an external burner connected through FireWire I will do something extra special for you (prize to be determined)!

    #1 Find a friend with a PC.
#2 Remove burner from firewire box.
#3 Install burner in PC as a MASTER drive.
#4 Run the flash update software to update the drive.
Reverse the steps to put it back in your system.

Or buy a really cheap used PC that you only use for things like this. Anything over a PII 300 Mhz should work, and you should be able to find one of those for under $75 used.

These are the steps I am precisely trying to avoid. I should just sell this on eBay and buy a new one.

I think if you can install it as a internal drive in you Mac, you might also be able to fix it. But that would mean you either need another IDE cable and power cable, and run you machine with the side open, or tear off the protective wrapper so you can remove your current optical drive, and then install the DVD-R in its place. Once you have it flashed you could then put it back in the firewire case.

I wonder if you could use a DOS flash utility through VPC, probably need a windows utility though since it's firewire. You've prolly tried all those already.
