I know that many standalone DVD players won't work with miniDVD/cDVD. This is supposed to be because the drive can't read the CD fast enough.
Proper DVD video bitrates can vary from 1-10Mbps. But a the majority of standalone players are only able to read about 2.5mbps off a CD.
Has anyone tried authoring a miniDVD that doesn't exceed 2.5mbps (for sony players)?
i also need information on muxing dvd streams with other audio formats, not just mpeg1-layer2. How do i mux dolby digital or dts streams?
well, really what i want is a program that would demultiplex the mpeg2 video on a dvd and replace it with video encoded at a lower bitrate. is this possible without affecting the disc structure? then it could be burned onto a cd. this could also be useful for converting dual layer and/or dual sided dvds to dvd-r(w).

The bitrate is not the only the only reason why MiniDVDs don't work on most players. As far as I know, most DVD players detect what kind of medium is inserted, and if it's a CD-R, they will try to play it back as a VCD or SVCD but not as a DVD (with the corresponding file structure).

that might be true. i'm sure a lot of manufacturers wouldn't want to support these probably pirate discs. just like sony not supporting svcd even though the hardware is capable of handling it. i muxed 480x576 mpeg2 into a vcd and it worked. so did 720x576 2.5mbps. so this is almost minidvd... but with limited bitrate, 44khz mpeg1 audio only, simpler menu system.
i have seen a lot of people trying to make minidvd the wrong way though... they don't use udf format on their minidvd. dvds use udf. its just like people who think vcds are just normal data cds. they just copy the files over. then they wonder why it won't play in standalone players, and they have a heart attack when they try to copy a vcd that has 800mb on an 80min cd... -
I agree with what Freshman stated. If you are having spin speed problems you should be rejoicing because your player can recognise miniDVD.
Most DVD players don't even look for the DVD structure once a CD medium has be detected... thus they are incapable of playing a miniDVD, regardless of the bitrate and medium.
