Had a Philips DVDR985A, and finally gave up on it. Got a Magnavox MDC630R1/17 and since Philips owns Magnavox which Philips desktop unit is closed to the Magnavox. Thanks.

Okay, unless (or until) someone who knows better provides an answer, I'll offer the following:
The design of the unit looks remarkably similar (almost identical, actually) to the Philips DVDR880 which was produced for the European market. Check out the picture at:

Now, notice the MDV630 uses the same firmware revision as the Philips 72/75:
