  1. Ok, I have been switching back between DVD Shrink and DVD2One most of the time, lately I have been using Shrink for all of my backups...

In any case, I am just wondering, do all programs that allow you to make backups of DVD's work the same way in that they give you the same result in the end, or do different programs provide different output's for movies?

For example, I'd like to backup Scarface, and I was planning on using DVD Shrink 3.1, but I just wondered if there was any better program to use that can provide me with better quality.

    Thanks for any tips...

  2. I go by lordsmurfs recommendations regarding shrink and dvd2one. most movies that are between 90-120 minutes i use dvd2one (fast transcoding without deep analysis, i got an older machine) and anything over 2 hours or episode discs i use shrink with deep analysis. most of the time, i load up the movie in shrink and if it shows me no compression or very little, i use dvd2one. go by what you like. I go back and forth. i've tried most methods and they all work, just make sure you get good media.

I recently tested DVDShrink version 3.1.7.5 against DVD2ONE version 1.4.0 using DISC 2 of FREDDY VS JASON

This is a DVD9 and is a bonus disc. I forget the total size but it was pretty close to the MAX of a DVD9 ... something like 7.5GB if I recall.

I did the whole movie in DVDShrink using DEEP ANALYSIS and used FULL DISC mode in DVD2ONE

I compared them both on my computer and on my TV using my old trusty Hollywood Plus card (basically has MPEG-1/MPEG-2 output on par with any stand alone DVD player ... not shitty video out like that found on a video card).

In my conclusion I went with the DVD2ONE back-up. Overall it was sharper than the DVDShrink output which was a bit softer. I did notice some more macroblocking on the DVD2ONE back-up looking on the computer but it was fairy minor and you really couldn't see them on my test TV (though that was only an old 13" TV ... haven't watched the burned DVD yet on my 27" TV).

I didn't like the "softness" of the DVDShrink output. Also I noticed that the backgrounds on the DVDShrink version seemed to "dance" around more than the DVD2ONE output. DVD2ONE definately had more detail.

I normally don't transcode something down this much (as I recall I think it was around 58%) but then again it was just an extras disc and I didn't feel like trying to break it up into 2 discs.

For DISC 1 of FREDDY VS JASON I used DVDShrink because Disc 1 basically jsut has the movie but has FULL SCREEN and WIDESCREEN versions. I found that when I did STILL IMAGES to the FULL SCREEN version that it made the total size just small enough so that it would fit on a single layer DVD recordable without any futher compression anywhere else. Since I don't intend to watch the FULL SCREEN version this made the back-up easy and basically compression free (at least for the WIDESCREEN version and everything else on the DVD).

    I don't use DVD2One but I do use DVDshrink.

For average size DVDs I use shrink....90 minutes or so....

For larger DVDs I use Instant Copy 7.

For me anyway...I get better quality out of IC7 than I do with DVDshrink on larger disc. IC7 allows me to lower %'s on the extras to 30%.

If the DVD too big for IC7 then I use IFOedit and just make a movie only disc. If the movie itself is still over 4.3 GB then I will take the movie only into IC7 and compress it.

So to answer your question, IMO, yes different programs can make a big difference in quality. I did scarface with IC7.
