  1. Hello,

Maybe its a silly question but I wanna ask it anyway. I had this homemovie which I managed to copy to my computer in the avi-format. I created the subtitles myself and when I play it through, for instance, the Windows Media Player it shows it perfectly. Now for my question :

I wanna burn this movie to a CD. I dont have a DVD-burner so it could be burned to a VCD, right? Alright, so the file is about 810 Megabytes so I need to split it to two CD's which is covered in the guides and some posts on this site here. But will the subtitles also be burned on those CD's? As said, I created a file for the subtitles (a srt-file). When I split the movie and burn it, will it also include the subtitles? Or am I missing a step now?

    Thanks in advance,

    Melissa

  2. in order to make your movie a VCD, you will need to convert the avi to mpeg1 format. Applications which do this are TMPGENC, procorder/mainconcept, and CCE. For VCD, TMPGENC is the free choice. Nero has an encoder, but it wont work based on the avi file size.

Two main flavors of AVI, highly compressed AVI (like xvid for example) and "uncompressed" avi.

I'll give you the step in the right direction, but you will need to review some guides that will fill in some of the blanks:

    1. Use TMPGENC to convert your VCD to (assuming NTSC) 352x240 1150bps 44.1 audio. There is a VCD template that will do all of this for you in the TMPGENC wizard

    2. After converting (which will take 3-20 hours depending on a number of things), you will likely need to split the video into two files. TMPGENC can do this for you with its splitting function. If you go with the specs above (dont reply back asking about why it doesnt play in your player if you dont use those specs), you can cut the video at 80 minutes (do 70-75 minutes just to be safe)

    3. After splitting, use nero's wizard to make a VCD and import your resulting mpeg file. Then burn at less than 8x for both video's

Before doing any of this, look to the left under dvd players and make sure that your dvd player can play VCD's.

  3. Macleod..thanks so much for your detailed reply. I tried it and the video looks ok on CD now..but still without the subtitles.

I also tried working with this AVI-file to make it fit on one CD, as shown in this article : https://www.videohelp.com/forum/userguides/84759.php and actually, with this way the movie turned out with a better quality. Or maybe I just didn't quite understood your explanation enough..I'm just a blonde desperately trying to understand all this stuff

But eitherway, the subtitles werent included. I must say I like this second (fitting on one CD) option the best..and not because it fits on one CD but because of the better quality (although I think it must be a settings-issue rather than the options itself). The weirdest thing is, I still have the original AVI-file which displays the subtitles perfectly..but the MPG-file (courtesy of TMPGENC) wont display them. Do you or anybody have an idea how to do this? I'm sure I must be missing something..

Thanks to Macleod once again for your help offered..at least I understand things a bit better now..thanks to you

    Greets, Melissa
